Detroit senior Renato Susnja (Dearborn, MI/Edsel Ford) scored the game-winning goal in the 108th minute to help propel the UDM men's soccer team to a 3-2 double overtime victory against Xavier at Titan Field Sunday afternoon. With this win, UDM improves to 1-5-0 on the year, while the Musketeers fall to 0-7-0 overall.
With minutes remaining in the second overtime, the ball was squared out at the 18 yard line and was then played back to the Titans. UDM junior #Nick Dreshaj# (Clinton Twp., MI/Chippewa Valley) got an opportunity and flicked the ball to Susnja who then one timed it into the back of the net from about six yards out for his first goal of the season.
Dreshaj, who ended the afternoon with three points, scored UDM's first goal against the Musketeers at the 2:27 mark off of a corner kick from sophomore Ken Simon (Brighton, MI/Brighton) who took it from the left side when looking at the net. Dreshaj was in a mix of defenders but was able to leap into the air and headed the ball directly into the center of the net for his second goal of the year.
Xavier junior Ricardo Sutherland took a free kick in the 17th minute, which made it past a wall of UDM defenders and the ball then trickled into the right side of the net to tie the game.
At the 55:34 mark, Simon took another corner kick from the left side of the net and teammate sophomore Jacob Munchiando (Canton, MI/Plymouth) got a touch of the ball which was then passed to sophomore #Matt Spencer# (Rochester Hills, MI/Bishop Foley). Spencer then took a hard shot and watched it go past an outstretched XU freshman keeper Ryan Engelmann to put the Titans up by one.
With just under seven minutes remaining in regulation Musketeer sophomore Andy Dimbi took a free kick from about 20 yards out and watched it sail over Detroit sophomore goalkeeper Bryan Kloss (Fraser, MI/Bishop Foley) into the center of the net, which tied the game for a second time Sunday afternoon.
Kloss played the entire game for the Titans in net and tallied four saves, while allowing two goals. Engelmann collected two saves and allowed three goals in over 107 minutes of play for the Musketeers.
Detroit had an 18-12 advantage on shots and also had eight corner kicks to Xavier's four.
This marks Detroit's first overtime game thus far this season and the Titans first double extra session match since a 0-0 draw against Green Bay in Wisconsin on Oct. 14, 2007.
The Titans will return to action when they face Loyola in Chicago on Sept. 26 at 9 p.m. EST.
