In the first day of the University at Buffalo Fall Classic, Detroit's men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to Canisius Friday evening at UB Stadium in Buffalo, NY.
In the opening minutes of the game, UDM sophomore Ken Simon (Brighton, MI/Brighton) had a free kick that hit the left post for one of Detroit's four shots of the first half. In the 22nd minute, junior Nick Dreshaj (Clinton Township, MI) fired off a shot from the right side, but it was blocked by freshman goalkeeper Adam Miller.
At the 23:55 mark, Canisius junior Alan McGreal took a shot from about 15 yards out and beat an outstretched Detroit junior goalkeeper Bryan Kloss (Fraser, MI/Bishop Foley) to put the score at 1-0. The Griffins scored their second goal at 39:26 as McGreal passed it to sophomore Hector Rodriguez who headed the ball down and saw it pass the goal line.
In the 54th minute, Simon took a hard shot for Detroit and watched it go just wide of the net. But, about two minutes later, Canisius junior Mike Globits and Miller both went for the ball, as well as UDM freshman Sam Seppo (Port Huron, MI/Port Huron). The two Griffs players collided with each other and Seppo was able to jump over the two players and took a shot, which trickled into the open net for Seppo's first collegiate goal of the year. Detroit sophomore Mateusz Szwed (Southgate, MI/Southgate Anderson) earned an assist on the goal.
With 1:23 remaining in the game, McGreal was able to beat a few defenders and hit a laser from about 10 yards out for the Griffs' third goal of the night.
Canisius had a slight advantage on shots, 13-11, and the Griffs collected seven corner kicks to the Titans' three. Kloss tallied five saves on the night and allowed three goals, while Miller collected two saves for Canisius, while allowing one goal.
The Titans will return to action when they face host-school, Buffalo, on Sept. 7 at UB Stadium (2 p.m.).
