The Detroit Titans women's soccer team secured its first road win of the season with a 2-0 shutout win over Madonna University Friday afternoon at Greenmeade Park. Behind another solid defensive effort spearheaded by freshman goalkeeper Joanna Hinde, the Titans have recorded shutouts in each of the last three games.
"We tried some different formations to help our offense which seemed to pay off," said head coach Mike Lupenec. "Once again our defense was outstanding in getting our third straight shutout. During this streak, we have not been scored on since the first half of our season opener against Central Michigan which also includes a double overtime game against Eastern Michigan. Our kids are really doing a good job."
The Titans were led by the freshman twin sister tandem of Alison and Alexandra Suschak who tallied their first career game-winning points. At the 41:31 mark of the first half, Alexandra passed the ball up from her midfield position to Alison who in turn blasted a shot from approximately 25 yards out that beat Madonna goalkeeper Brittany Warner at the top right corner giving the Titans a 1-0 lead.
Madonna came close to tying the game in the second half as Sarah Rokuski took a centering pass and executed a half-volley which drifted over Hinde's head but hit the corner of the crossbar.
Detroit caught a break at the 22:13 mark as Warner tried to dribble to ball just in front of the goal where Selena Stanski pressed, made the steal and walked the ball into the net giving the Titans a commanding 2-0 lead. UDM continued to stay back and put the clamps on defensively to secure the 2-0 victory.
"We got off to a rough start in the season opener against Central Michigan but now I feel we are coming together as a team which is why were are undefeated over the last three games," said senior defender Melanie Slusher."It was good to get our first road win of the season and see the offense get two goals and control the tempo for most of the game."
"We are starting to build good team chemistry," said junior forward Emily Kiely. "I look for us to maintain momentum which is very important as we head into our next stretch of games against some really good teams."
UDM travels out west for a non-conference match at the University California-Irvine on Friday, Sept. 12 at 10:00 p.m. EST.
