Detroit senior
Sandi Brown (Toledo, OH/Start) scored four points in the last minute to help force overtime, but the Titans came up short in the extra session against Valparaiso to fall by a final score of 70-65 in a Horizon League match-up at Calihan Hall Saturday afternoon. UDM falls to 5-10 overall (1-3 HL), while the Crusaders improve to 7-7 on the year (2-2).
In overtime, junior
Chanica Hall (Minneapolis, MN/Benilde-St. Margaret's) scored a lay-up with 1:53 remaining to put the score at 66-65 in favor of the Titans, but Valpo senior Leah Hochstetler responded seconds later with a 3-pointer to give the Crusaders the lead again. With 26 seconds left, senior Aimee Litka made both of her attempts at the line to help clinch the victory for Valpo as Detroit freshman
Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) missed her attempt from beyond the arc to tie the game with six seconds left.
After being down by eight in the second half, Detroit used a 13-0 scoring run to push ahead of the Valpo, 53-48, following two made free throws from Brown, who led the Titans in scoring with 16 points. Valpo had a 61-57 advantage after Hochstetler hit a 3-pointer, but Brown's two baskets, with assists from junior
Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian) and Jones, tied the game at 61 at the end of regulation.
Valparaiso led the first seven minutes of the opening half, but a 3-pointer from freshman
Lauren Allen (Rochester, MI/Rochester) pushed the Titans ahead by one (12-11) at the 13:32 mark. The Crusaders took their largest lead of the first half with just over eight minutes remaining after senior Launa Hochstetler sank one from long range to put the score at 24-17.
Detroit then responded with a 14-2 scoring run in the next 4:33 to pull ahead, 31-26, for its largest lead of the first stanza. During this stretch, Hall scored seven points and she dished out an assist to Allen who capped off the scoring run for the Titans, but Valpo led, 35-31, at the break.
Three other Titans scored in double figures in Hall, who shot 7-of-10 from the field to end with a team second-best 15 points, Mulroy (13) and Jones (12). Brown also grabbed a team-best seven rebounds.
Junior Sylwia Zabielewicz came off the bench for Valpo to score a game-high and career-best 20 points and also pulled down a personal-best nine caroms.
Detroit shot 44 percent on the day (26-of-59), while Valpo shot 25-of-61 from the field (41 percent). The Crusaders had a 39-28 advantage on the boards and also tallied 12 steals to UDM's 10.
The Titans return to the road next weekend as they face Green Bay at the Resch Center on Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. EST.
