Titans Ice Penguins, 73-50

Box Score (in pdf)

On Homecoming, senior Sandi Brown (Toledo, OH/Start) collected her third double-double of the season to help lead the Titans to a 73-50 victory over Youngstown State in a Horizon League match-up at Calihan Hall Saturday evening. Detroit now owns a 6-13 overall record (2-6 HL), while the Penguins fall to 2-16 on the year (0-7).

Along with Brown's 14 point and career-high 14 rebound showing, two other Titans scored in double figures with junior Chanica Hall (Minneapolis, MN/Benilde-St. Margaret's) leading the way with a game-high 19 points. Junior Heather Hatter (Howell, MI/Howell) added a career-high 13 points, which included a 7-of-8 showing at the line.

“I challenged the upperclassmen and wanted to see where their hearts were and how bad they wanted to win,” said head coach Autumn Rademacher. “I wanted them to take take this team on their backs and they stepped up to lead us to a big win. I also was really happy we were able to get our post players involved because that was something missing from the last couple of games and we need to continue to incorporate it into our game plan because it leads to point blank lay-ups which we need to be making. This is a team win and I hope this is something our student-athletes can be proud of and build upon moving ahead.”

“This was a big win for us to build our confidence and continue the season on the right foot,” said Brown. “Plus, it feels good to get a win on my last Homecoming game which is very exciting.”

The Titans regained the lead at 14:27 after junior Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian) hit a lay-up off a pass from Hall to put the score at 9-8. Detroit dominated the rest of the contest and never relinquished its lead against YSU.

In a span of 6:23, UDM outscored the Penguins, 19-2, to push its advantage to 20 (42-22) after Hall netted a 2-pointer with just over two minutes left in the first. During this run, Brown and Hall each contributed six points for the Titans and, at the break, Detroit led by a score of 44-31.

The closest the Penguins would get to Detroit in the second half was 15 points, which happened at 16:44 (48-33). The largest lead of the game for the Titans was 25 after redshirt freshman Talicia Washington (Auburn Hills, MI/Avondale) made a lay-up with just under two minutes remaining to put the score at 71-46.

Youngstown State freshman Camisha Alexander scored a team-high 15 points, while teammate senior Kelsey Gurganus dished out a game-high five assists.

Detroit shot 44 percent from the field, while the Penguins had an 18-of-48 showing on the night. The Titans had a stellar showing at the line as they made 21-of-27 attempts and they also dominated on the boards with 38 rebounds to YSU's 21.

This marks the largest margin of victory for the Titans thus far this season since a 61-51 victory at Colgate on Nov. 29 and the 13 steals by Detroit matches its season-high from UDM's 76-75 double overtime victory at Eastern Michigan (Dec. 20).

The Titans will next face Wright State in Dayton, OH, on Jan. 31 at 1 p.m.
