Despite Second Half Rally, Detroit Falls at UIC

Box Score (in pdf)

Detroit used a second half comeback to erase a 14-point deficit against UIC, but the Titans were unable to hold on and were edged by the Flames, 69-66, Monday night in a Horizon League match-up at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, IL. UDM falls to 5-8 on the year (1-1 HL), while the Flames improve to 8-4 overall (2-0).

With just under two minutes remaining, UDM senior Sandi Brown (Toledo, OH/Start), who scored a team-high 15 points, stole the ball from an unsuspecting UIC player and managed to score a 2-pointer off the turnover to tie the game at 65. Brown was fouled and converted the 3-point play to give the Titans their first lead of the game since 13:04 of the first stanza.

UIC redshirt freshman Shameia Green was fouled at 1:18 and was able to put UIC ahead (67-66) after making both attempts, even after Detroit tried to freeze her by taking a time out in between the two shots.

Detroit had opportunities in the closing seconds to take the lead as junior Heather Hatter (Howell, MI/Howell) went to the line, but was unable to make either attempt. Green then made another visit to the charity stripe with 16 seconds left and made both to put the score at 69-66. Junior Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian) took a shot from beyond the arc to try and tie the game, but it bounced out of the rim, went out of bounds and the possession went to the Flames.

In the first half, Detroit matched its largest lead of four at 13:22 after Hatter netted a 2-point field goal to put the score at 10-6. UIC responded with a 9-0 scoring run, which was halted after Hatter hit a lay-up off of an assist from freshman Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) with just over 10 minutes remaining.

Mulroy, who ended with a team second-best 13 points, pulled the Titans within two (22-20) at 8:17 after nailing one from long range, but Detroit would not score a basket for the next 6:41 as the Flames scored 12 unanswered points, eight of which came from Green. However, the Titans scored the final six points of the half to have the scoreboard read 34-26 at the half.

UIC freshman Jasmine Bailey poured in a game-high 22 points, while Green matched Mulroy's effort of 13 points.

Detroit shot 44 percent on the night (24-of-55), while UIC had a 49 percent showing (26-of-53). The Titans had a 37-29 advantage on the boards and UDM tallied eight steals to the Flames' six.

The Titans will return to Calihan Hall on Jan. 8 when they host Butler at 7 p.m.
