Women's Basketball Suffers 71-48 Setback to Visiting Butler

Box Score (in pdf)

After being away from Calihan Hall for the past four games, the Detroit Titans women's basketball team (5-9, 1-2 HL) returned Thursday evening, but UDM was unable to capture its second Horizon League win of the season as the Titans fell by a score of 71-48 to visiting Butler (8-6, 3-0).

Senior Sandi Brown (Toledo, OH/Start), who scored a team-high nine points, netted a jumper at 16:14, which put the score at 7-2, to help give Detroit its largest lead of the game. Butler came back and knotted the contest at nine less than three minutes later after senior Lade Akande made a lay-up off of an assist from sophomore Brittany Bowen. After the score was tied again at 11, the Titans pushed their lead to five again at the 10:21 mark after senior Zemora Davis (Detroit, MI/Community) dished out a pass to freshman Lauren Allen (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester), who then sank one from long range to put the score at 16-11.

The Bulldogs responded and scored 13 unanswered points, which included three treys to give Butler a 24-16 advantage with just under four minutes remaining. Redshirt freshman Talicia Washington (Auburn Hills, MI/Avondale) snapped Detroit's 7:36 scoring drought after making a lay-up off of a helper from junior Chanica Hall (Minneapolis, MN/Benilde-St. Margaret's), but the Titans managed only one more point in the closing minutes for Butler to take a 30-19 lead into the break.

In the second stanza, the closest Detroit would get to the Bulldogs was nine, which happened twice in the opening minutes, the second of which occurred after Allen made a fastbreak lay-up at 18:34 to put the score at 23-32. With just under 10 minutes left, Butler junior Susan Lester, who poured in a game-high 14 points and grabbed a game-best eight rebounds, hit a midrange jumper to give the Bulldogs its largest lead of the game of 26 (29-55).

Detroit shot 38 percent on the night (18-of-47), while Butler was 27-of-61 from the field. The Bulldogs had a 40-24 advantage on the boards, and tallied eight steals to UDM's seven.

The Titans return to the hardwood on Jan. 10 when they host Valparaiso at 2 p.m.
