The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team was edged by Loyola, 2-0, at Titan Field under extremely windy conditions Saturday afternoon.
The game-winning goal for the Ramblers came at the 74:45 mark as sophomore Jordan Lewis took a throw in for LUC. Sophomore Erik Warren was there to receive the ball and took a header which, with the help of the wind, snuck past UDM freshman netminder
Brandon Waterstradt (Dearborn Heights, MI/Catholic Central) into the high right corner of the net.
The second goal of the contest came about six minutes later off a penalty kick from Eric Gehrig.
"We made enough chances today to win the game but failed to finish those chances," said Detroit interim head coach
Nick Deren. "I cannot ask anything more of our back line, they did what we needed them to do today, but you have issues when you are unable to score."
Detroit sophomore
Otieno Victor (Kisumu Nyanza, Kenya/Kakamega) tallied a game-high seven shots, while teammate senior
Ken Simon (Brighton, MI/Brighton) took five, three of which were on goal.
Waterstradt allowed two goals and tallied two saves in 90 minutes of play, while freshman goalkeeper Christian Krueger was in net the entire contest for the Ramblers and collected six saves.
Detroit outshout LUC, 22-17, and the Titans also had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
"We took 22 shots today, but our problem was our inability to clear Loyola's set pieces and defend inside our box," commented Deren. "We played great on the rest of the field, but played poorly inside of 18 yards both offensively and defensively."
The Titans will return to action when they play in their final road game of the season on Wednesday at Bowling Green. Kick-off is slated for 2 p.m.
