Mulroy Scores Career High Against #10 Michigan State

Box Score

Post-game interview with Brigid Mulroy and head coach Autumn Rademacher

Detroit senior Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian) poured in a career-high and game-best 27 points against #10 Michigan State (1-1) in women's basketball action, but the Titans (1-1) were unable to hold on to their one-point halftime lead and fell by a score of 71-62 at Calihan Hall Sunday afternoon.

"Brigid (Mulroy) was outstanding,” said Detroit head coach Autumn Rademacher. “We anticipated that maybe they would be playing a little bit of zone just because they were at Dayton on Friday and they might have been fatigued because that was a very physical game, which we watched. So when they went to the zone, we thought we might be able to break it, and our point guards did an outstanding job of finding Brigid."

Two other Titans scored in double figures in freshman Demeisha Fambro (Detroit, MI/Crockett Tech) with 13 and sophomore Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) with 10. UDM sophomore Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for her second consecutive game with double digit caroms.

After State took the lead in the opening minutes of the second stanza, Jones cut Detroit's deficit to two (44-42) by pouring in her second 3-pointer of the afternoon, but State responded with seven unanswered points to take a nine-point lead (51-42) with just over 13 minutes remaining and the Spartans would hold the lead the rest of the contest. Detroit was able to pull within four after Mulroy converted a three-point play at 6:42 (60-56), but that was the closest the Titans would get the rest of the afternoon.

"All the non-conference games are in preparation for conference so that's what we're taking this as today,” said Mulroy. “If we play every night like we fought in this game, we're going to do fine the rest of the year and that's we really what we told everyone in the locker room afterward.”

Three Spartans netted double figures in senior Aisha Jefferson (16), senior Lauren Aitch (13) and sophomore Courtney Schiffauer (12), while sophomore Lykendra Johnson and Aitch each pulled down eight rebounds for MSU.

In the opening half, Detroit was ahead by one at 13:25 and tacked on eight unanswered points to take its largest lead of the game at nine (22-13). During the run, Mulroy nailed two from long range, while freshman Kassandra Hooten (Moorhead, MN/Moorhead) made both of her attempts from the line.

UDM held onto its first half lead until Jefferson hit a jumper to put the score at 25-24 with just under seven minutes remaining. The Titans responded with an 8-0 scoring run, which was capped off with back-to-back treys from Shayok and Fambro. After being down by two, Jones sank a 3-pointer with six seconds on the clock to give Detroit a 37-36 advantage at the break.

"I wish we had a few more players on our roster that we could have shuffled in and out like they did,” added Rademacher. “I feel like our players played their hearts out, left it all on the floor, and unfortunately we had to rely on seven players and we ran out of gas."

Detroit shot 35 percent on the day (20-of-57), while Michigan State had a 28-of-68 showing from the field (41 percent). MSU had a 46-33 advantage on the boards, but the Titans shot 78 percent from the charity stripe compared to MSU's 57 percent effort.

The Titans will return to action when they face Cincinnati at the Fifth Third Arena in Ohio on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m.
