Detroit Falls At Cincinnati, 65-58

Box Score

Detroit was able to pull within one after being down by as much as 17 in the second half, but the Titans (1-2) ended up falling to the University of Cincinnati (2-1) in women's basketball action by a score of 65-58 at the Fifth Third Arena Saturday afternoon.

With the scoreboard reading 46-29 in favor of the Bearcats at 14:23, Detroit made up 16 points in less than a nine-minute span. During that time, the Titans netted five 3-pointers, including three from senior Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian) and one from freshman Demeisha Fambro (Detroit, MI/Crockett Tech), and Cherridy Thornton's (Detroit, MI/Frank Cody Senior) trey capped off the run to pull Detroit within one (51-50). However, that was the closest the Titans would get to UC the remainder of the game.

Detroit sophomore forward Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) collected another double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds and a team second-best 12 points. Mulroy led the way for the Titans with 13 points, while sophomore Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) also netted double figures with 11.

About five minutes into the first stanza, UDM sophomore Lauren Allen (Rochester, MI/Rochester), who dished out a team-high five assists, knotted the game at eight after netting a fastbreak lay-up off an assist from Fambro. Then at 11:32, the Titans generated their largest lead of the game of five, after Mulroy hit a midrange jumper to put the score at 15-10.

Shayok made a lay-up to shrink UC's lead to just one with about five minutes remaining in the first 20 minutes, but the Bearcats responded with a 10-2 run to close out the half with a 33-24 advantage.

UC juniors Shareese Ulis and Carla Jacobs each tied for a game-high of 15 points, while Michelle Jones pulled down a team-best eight caroms.

Both teams shot an identical 21-of-59 from the field (36 percent), but Cincinnati made nine attempts from long range compared to Detroit's six. The Titans only missed one at the charity stripe (10-of-11), while the Bearcats had a 14-of-18 showing on free throws.

The Titans will return to action when they host Canisius on Tuesday at Calihan Hall, with tip-off slated for 7 p.m.
