Titans Lose Heartbreaker In Overtime To DePaul

Box Score

Coach McCallum's Post-Game Press Conference on Titan YouTube

Four Titans scored in double figures and twice Detroit fought back from a double-digit deficit to force overtime, but sophomore Chase Simon's 3-pointer with less than 10 seconds left fell short as UDM fell to DePaul, 68-66, on Saturday afternoon.

The Titans (4-2) were down by three in overtime, 63-60, when Simon (Detroit, MI/Community) nailed a trey with 1:24 left to tie the game. DePaul (4-1) then took the lead as Will Walker hit a three from beyond NBA range to put the Blue Demons ahead with 49 seconds left. Junior Xavier Keeling (Huntsville, AL/J.O. Johnson) got the Titans within two with 16 seconds on the clock with a free throw and, on the next DePaul possession, Tony Freeland would miss two from the line setting up the final play as Simon put up the potential game-winner.

A DePaul bucket off the long rebound and junior Lamar Lee's (Lafayette, IN/Jefferson) runner as the clock expired made the final outcome, 68-66.

Senior Thomas Kennedy (Detroit, MI/Southeastern) had a team-high 17 points and seven rebounds, while Simon added 16 markers and five boards. Lee ended with a season-high 13 and Keeling finished with 12 points, four rebounds and a team-high four assists, playing all 45 minutes in the contest.

Detroit got into overtime after rallying from a double-digit deficit for the second time. Down 46-36 with 12 minutes left, Detroit slowly started chopping down on the DePaul advantage. With under seven to go and the Blue Demons up by seven, 51-44, Lee connected on a three to get UDM within four. After a DePaul free throw pushed the lead to five, sophomore Eli Holman (Richmond, CA/Richmond) hit a jumper and Lee tied the game with his third 3-pointer of the contest.

The game was tied three more times down the stretch, the last time as Lee hit a jumper to knot the score at 58 with 1:35 remaining in the second half. Detroit would have the ball with under a minute to go, but Keeling's drive to the basket came up short and Holman's putback was too strong off the glass, giving DePaul the chance to win it in regulation. The Titan defense held strong, keeping the ball out of Walker's hands, as the Blue Demons settled for a long three that was too strong, but they did collect the offensive rebound and threw up another shot as the horn sounded.

Walker had a game-high 20 points for DePaul, who shot 44% for the game including 53% in the first half. The Titans nearly matched that shooting 43% in the contest.

The game was a back and forth affair at the start with the Titans down by just one, 18-17, until the Blue Demons went on a 10-0 run to open an 11-point advantage. Detroit fought through that stretch and with a bucket off an offensive rebound by Simon with three seconds left, went into the half down by just six, 34-28.

Detroit returns to action on Thursday when the Titans open up Horizon League play with Youngstown State coming into Calihan Hall. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m., and is the start of six home games in the month of December for UDM.
