It was raining three's in Terre Haute, IN, Tuesday night, as there was a combined 21 made treys from Detroit and Indiana State but, despite a new career-high of six made 3-pointers from UDM senior
Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian), the Titans dropped a 70-53 decision in women's basketball action at the Hulman Center.
Mulroy led all scorers with 20 points, which is the third time this season she has scored 20 or more, and Detroit sophomore
Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) grabbed a game-high 12 boards. Sophomores
Lauren Allen (Rochester, MI/Rochester) and
Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) tied for a game-best five assists, while Allen tallied a new career-high of four steals.
With the Titans down by one at the 13:34 mark of the first half, Detroit responded with a 6-0 scoring run, which was capped off with a lay-up from Shayok off an assist from Allen to give UDM its largest lead of the game at five (14-9). With just under eight minutes remaining, Mulroy netted one from long range, with help from Shayok, to give UDM a 22-20 advantage, but the Sycamores then responded with 10 unanswered points. Jones scored the last five points of the half for Detroit to pull the Titans within three (33-30) at the break.
The Sycamores (6-0) maintained their lead in the second half, but the Titans did pull within one, twice, with the last happening at 14:30 after Allen hit a jumper to put the score at 40-39. Mulroy netted a trey with just over 10 minutes remaining in the contest to shrink ISU's lead to seven (52-45), but that was the closest Detroit would get the rest of the way.
“Obviously I'm disappointed because I thought we had a good game plan,” said Detroit head coach
Autumn Rademacher. “They (ISU) hit some big 3-pointers at the end and we ran out of gas. It's the same old story, but we need to get past it.
“I thought it was a very physical game and we had no answer for Shannon Thomas, who was a force down low and we couldn't do anything with her.”
Three Sycamores scored in double figures with Thomas netting a team-high 17, while Brittany Schoen scored 11 and Chelsea Buher came off the bench to add 15 for ISU. Kelsie Cooley grabbed a team-best 10 caroms, while Kelsey Luna collected a game-high six steals.
Detroit shot 33 percent on the night (18-of-55), while the Sycamores had a 24-of-59 showing from the field (41 percent). Rebounds were even at 36 a piece and ISU had a 10-6 advantage in the steals category.
The Titans (1-4) will return to action when they host Eastern Michigan on Saturday at 3:30 p.m., which follows a UDM men's home game against Cleveland State (1:05 p.m.)
