Five Titans Score in Double Figures at Morehead State

Box Score (in pdf)

Five Titans scored in double figures, with freshman Demeisha Fambro (Detroit, MI/Crockett Tech) and sophomore Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) tying for a team-high 15, but Detroit's women's basketball team fell by a score of 84-71 against Morehead State at the Johnson Arena in Morehead, KY, Sunday afternoon.

Freshman Kassandra Hooten (Moorhead, MN/Moorehead) notched 14 in her second start of the season, while sophomore Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) and senior Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian) added 12 and 10, respectively.

Detroit trailed by 16 with just under nine minutes remaining in the first half, but the Titans responded with a 10-0 scoring run to cut the deficit to six and put the score at 29-23 after Jones made both of her attempts at the line.

About four minutes later, sophomore Sierra Spaude (Sturgeon Bay, WI/Sturgeon Bay), in her first game in a Titan uniform, drained one from long range, off an assist from sophomore Lauren Allen (Rochester, MI/Rochester), to pull Detroit within five (38-33). But the Eagles made the last basket of the half to take a seven-point advantage with them at the break.

In the opening minutes of the second stanza, Hooten hit a lay-up to pull Detroit within four (43-39), but that was the closest the Titans would get to the Eagles the remainder of the contest.

MSU (7-3) had an 18-point lead at 1:24, but Detroit scored nine unanswered points to pull within nine in the final minute after Fambro scored two, Mulroy hit a three, while Hooten and Jones, who tied a season-high of seven assists, each made both of their free throw attempts. The Eagles made all six of their tries at the charity stripe in the closing minute to help secure their win.

MSU junior Chynna Bozeman led all scorers with 22 points, while teammate senior Tiffany Hamilton, who netted six treys, ended with 20 points. In addition, freshman Ashar Harris grabbed a game-best 11 rebounds.

Detroit (1-7) shot 25-of-55 from the field (46 percent), while Morehead State had a 48 percent showing (30-of-63). The Eagles sank a school record 16 3-pointers, while Detroit netted eight, three of which came from Mulroy. Detroit tallied eight steals to the Eagles' seven, while MSU outrebounded the Titans, 38-31.

The Titans will return to action when they host Big Ten member Michigan on Saturday at 1 p.m., which precedes a men's game against Bowling Green (3:35 p.m.).
