Post-game interview with head coach Autumn Rademacher
The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team dropped a 65-51 decision to Michigan Saturday afternoon at Calihan Hall. This marked the first time that Detroit head coach Autumn Rademacher faced her former boss, Michigan head coach Kevin Borseth.
Sophomore
Lauren Allen (Rochester, MI/Rochester) led the Titans in points (12) and steals (3), while sophomore
Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.
Detroit came right out of the gate and took control of the game as the Titans scored 11 unanswered points in the opening minutes and maintained their lead the entire first half against Michigan. Freshman
Kassandra Hooten (Moorhead, MN/Moorhead) collected four points during that scoring run and UDM did not allow the Wolverines to net their first basket until the 14:27 mark when sophomore Carmen Reynolds hit a midrange jumper off an assist from freshman Dayeesha Hollins.
Freshman
Demeisha Fambro (Detroit, MI/Crockett Tech) and Allen nailed back-to-back 3-pointers for Detroit to push its lead to double digits again (17-7) with just under 10 minutes left in the half. After senior
Brigid Mulroy made one from long range to put the score at 22-14, U-M responded with a 6-0 scoring run to pull within two about six minutes later. Shayok hit a lay-up with just over a minute left to put the score at 28-23, but U-M was able to add on two more points before the break.
Michigan (9-2) knotted the game at 32 at 16:12 of the second stanza and junior Veronica Hicks followed with a lay-up to give the Wolverines their first lead of the game. Junior
Tayler Langham (Plymouth, MI/Salem) drained one from long range to pull Detroit within one (40-39) with just over 11 minutes left, but that was the closest the Titans would get the remainder of the contest.
"With Tayler coming in, she plays at 100 miles per hour, so I think that helped and a lot of our kids fed off of her," said Rademacher. "I think that Tayler going in their and getting those minutes really heightened our intensity, as well as I know that our girls really wanted this game."
Three Wolverines scored in double figures with Hollins leading the way with 17, while Hicks and sophomore Courtney Boylan each adding 11 for U-M. Senior Krista Phillips and freshman Jenny Ryan each grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds, while Hollins dished out a game-high seven assists.
The Titans (1-8) will return to action when they face #11/12 Georgia on Tuesday, Dec. 22 in Athens, GA, at 7 p.m. Last season, Detroit captured a historic 70-66 victory over then #23 Georgia at Calihan Hall on Nov. 22.
