The University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team dropped a 66-42 decision to #9 Georgia at the Stegeman Coliseum in Athens, GA, Tuesday night.
Detroit senior
Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian) led the Titans in both scoring and rebounding with 14 and seven, respectively, with the seven boards tying for a game-high. In addition, sophomore
Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) tied for a game-best three assists and Mulroy collected a team-high two steals.
Mulroy started the scoring with a 3-pointer in the opening seconds and she netted another trey about three minutes later to put the Titans ahead, 6-4. At one point in the first half, Detroit held UGA without a field goal for 7:12, but the Bulldogs had an 8-for-8 showing from the line during that span to take a 20-16 lead with just over six minutes remaining in the stanza.
Sophomore
Lauren Allen (Rochester, MI/Rochester) pulled Detroit within one at 1:44 after making a midrange jumper with help from freshman
Kassandra Hooten (Moorhead, MN/Moorhead) and Hooten also cut UDM's deficit to just one a minute later after making a lay-up to put the score at 26-25. However, UGA senior Ashley Houts scored the last basket of the half to give the Bulldogs a four-point advantage at the break.
Jones made a fastbreak lay-up about four minutes into the second half to cut UGA's lead to 33-27 and freshman
Cherridy Thornton (Detroit, MI/Frank Cody Senior) also pulled Detroit within six about a minute later, but that was the closest the Titans would get the rest of the contest.
Three Bulldogs scored in double figures with freshman Jasmine Hassell coming off the bench to tie Mulroy with 14 points, while sophomore Meredith Mitchell and Houts each added 12 for UGA and junior Porsha Phillips grabbed a game-high 10 boards.
Detroit (1-9) shot 34 percent on the night, while Georgia (11-0) had a 24-of-74 showing from the field (32 percent). UGA made 13 of its 16 attempts at the line, while the Titans missed just one (8-of-9).
The Titans will return to action when they host Colgate on Wednesday, Dec. 30 at 7 p.m.
