Thomas Kennedy had a team-high 21 points and the UDM men's basketball team made several second-half chargers, but the Titans could not complete its comeback bid as Detroit fell 64-53 to UIC on Tuesday night.
The 21 markers by Kennedy (Detroit, MI/Southeastern) made it the fourth consecutive game, as well as the sixth time in the last seven contests, that a Titan reached the 20-point plateau. Kennedy also added a team-best eight rebounds, while senior
Michael Harrington (Country Club Hills, IL/Rich Central) registered 13 points and five boards on the night
The Titans (7-17, 2-12 HL) trailed by 11 at the half, 32-21, but came on with some urgency to start the second period, outscoring UIC (11-13, 4-10 HL) 9-3 in the first five minutes to get within five, 35-30.
The Flames would end the Titan run with a 12-3 spurt of its own to take a 14-point advantage, 47-33, with 11 minutes left in the game. UIC remained in front by the same margin, 49-35, with 9:18 to go when a 3-pointer by sophomore
Ryan Janer (Bay City, MI/All Saints Central) sparked the Titans to go on an 8-0 run to get within six, 49-43, at the 7:07 mark.
After UIC pushed its lead back to 10, 55-45, with 4:40 left, the red, white and blue had one final rally left in them as two free throws by Harrington and a lay up off an offensive rebound by Kennedy cut the deficit to just six, 55-49, but that was as close Detroit would get.
It was a sluggish start for both offenses as neither team scored for nearly three minutes to start the game. When the Titans did get on the board, it was Kennedy doing much of the scoring as the Detroit native netted 15 of Detroit's 21 first half points, including 13 straight in a seven-minute stretch in the middle of the first stanza. With the contest tied at 8, UIC went on an 11-2 charge to take a 19-10 lead with five minutes to go in the period. The Flames eventually pushed its lead to as many as 12 before heading into the half with 32-21 lead.
A date with Wright State is next for Detroit as the Titans and Raiders will meet on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at the Ervin J. Nutter Center.
