The Detroit Titans women's basketball team dropped a 59-44 decision to Green Bay in a Horizon League match-up at Calihan Hall Saturday afternoon. UDM falls to 8-16 on the year (4-9 HL), while Green Bay remains undefeated in conference play (13-0) and improves to 21-3 overall.
The first half was opened with seven straight baskets from long range, two of which came from Detroit junior
Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian), who finished with a game-best 15 points. After being down, 15-6, the Titans were then able to pull within five (15-10) after junior
Chanica Hall (Minneapolis, MN/Benilde-St. Margaret's) made a layup off an assist from freshman
Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) with just under 13 minutes left.
Green Bay responded with a 10-0 run, which was halted after UDM senior
Sandi Brown (Toledo, OH/Start) made both free throw attempts to put the score at 25-12 with 7:06 on the clock. Junior
Heather Hatter (Howell, MI/Howell) added two points shortly there after and Mulroy pulled UDM within 10 (31-21) with 22 seconds remaining as she drained a 3-pointer, but Phoenix sophomore Heather Golden hit one from beyond the arc as time expired to put the halftime score at 34-21.
About six minutes into the second stanza, Detroit was able to cut the deficit to 12 after Brown, who ended with a game-high nine rebounds, dished out a pass to Jones who made a fastbreak layup to put the score at 43-31. Green Bay had its largest lead of 19, twice, with the last coming at 4:20 after Phoenix senior Erin Templin hit a lay-up to have the scoreboard read, 38-57.
Detroit answered with four consecutive made free throws and UDM freshman
Lauren Allen (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester) made the last field goal of the game with just under two minutes remaining.
The Titans shot 35 percent on the afternoon (15-of-43), while the Phoenix had a 22-of-47 showing from the field (47 percent). Detroit edged Green Bay in rebounds, 29-27, while the Phoenix tallied 14 steals to UDM's nine.
The UDM athletics department recognized the WBCA Pink Zone initiative on Valentine's Day. The Pink Zone is a global, unified effort for the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.
The Titans will play their next two games on the road, which will be the last two regular season contests played away from Calihan Hall. Detroit will next face Youngstown State on Feb. 19 (7 p.m.) and will then face Cleveland State two days later (3 p.m.).
