Sophomore Lesley Hanna's (Exuma,Bahamas/Coakley) 400m win help lead the UDM men's track and field team to a fourth-place finish with 79 points at the 2009 Horizon League Track and Field Championships, held at DePauw University in Greencastle, IN.

“We had a fantastic meet,” said head coach Guy Murray. “We competed well against some great competitors and showed that we have the potential to do great things in the future.”

Hanna took home the crown in the 400m taking the race in 48.21. He then earned second in the 200m in 22.29, while also helping the 4x400m squad, composed of seniors Eric Christy (St. Clair, MI/St. Clair) and John LaRocca ((Eastpointe, MI/De LaSalle Collegiate) and freshman Joe LaRocca (Eastpointe, MI/De LaSalle Collegiate) to a second-place finish in a time of 3:19.30

“Lesley handled his three events going at once very well,” commented Murray. “He almost pulled off the relay with a 47.8 carry. Just a great finish to a break through year.”

The Titans sprinters excelled on the day, especially in the 60m where UDM took second, third and fourth place. Sophomore Earnest Cleary (Detroit, MI/Ferndale) was the top runner with a time of 7.03, while freshman Vushaun Landrum (Windsor, ON/Sandwich Secondary) (7.06) and sophomore Deonte Osayande (Detroit, MI/Wingate) (7.07) were right behind him. Cleary and Osayande also placed in the top seven in the 200m as Cleary was fifth in 23.14, while Osayande took seventh with a run of 23.22. Rounding out the sprint unit was freshman Aviram Campbell (Yale, MI/Yale) taking seventh in the 60mH with a time of 8.60.

Two sophomore runners scored in four more events for the Titans as Pat Liederach (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey) set a school record with a run of 8:22.47 in the 3000m, good for fifth place, while also claiming third in the 5000m in 14:41.78. Matt Mahler (Thorold, ON/Denis Morris Catholic) had two fifth-place performances in the 800m (1:55.05) and the mile (4:19.75)

“Pat had as good as any Titan distance performance ever,” said Murray. “He broke up Butler, which is a good habit to get into, as well as getting the school record by eight seconds.”

Senior Adam Mayhew (Richland, MI/Gull Lake) nearly came away with two wins settling for second in the shot put, with a heave of 14.70m/48'02.75”, and third in the weight with a 16.47m/54'00.50” throw.

The Titan distance medley relay scored in the top three with a third-place effort as the team of John LaRocca and sophomores Alex Gould (Comstock Park, MI/Comstock Park), Alex Harris (Huntington Woods, MI /Shrine) and Kevin Smalley (Gladwin, MI / Gladwin) crossed the finish line in 10:24.56.

The Titans will have one more indoor race to earn some qualifying marks for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, as Detroit is set to compete in the Alex Wilson Invitational next weekend in South Bend, IN.
