Fans in the Metro Detroit area will have an opportunity to race against an Olympian as 2008 Canadian team member Nate Brannen will be on hand to compete in the Elite Mile, presented by RunMichigan.com, during Detroit's Track & Field Classic, scheduled for Friday, April 3 at Titan Field. The meet begins at 3:30 p.m., with the mile events set to go at 7:00 p.m.
Brannen recently competed in the 2008 Olympics for Canada in the 1500m. He currently holds the Canadian indoor mile record at 3:55.11. He was the 2006 Canadian National Champion in the 1500m after a stellar collegiate career at Michigan, where he was a four time NCAA champion. In high school, Brannen ran the mile in 3:59.85.
A cash prize of $500.00 will be awarded to the winner of the Elite Mile as well as a special bonus of $1,000.00 for any sub-4 minute mile times posted in the event (Please note that the $1,000.00 bonus will be split if there is more then one sub-4 minute mile run).
If the mark is achieved, it would be the first time a runner has posted a sub-4 outdoors in the city of Detroit. Jim Ryun ran the first sub-4 in Detroit at Cobo Arena in 1967 and Suleiman Nyambui ran the Detroit record of 3:57.89 also at Cobo Arena in 1979.
Competitors wishing to enter the Open Mile, which immediately follows the Elite event, will have to submit an entry fee of $10.00. All participants 12 and under as well as UDM alumni will have the chance to participate in the even for free.
The collegiate meet will feature men and women from Bowling Green, Macomb, Oakland, Toledo, Wayne State and Youngstown State, as well as number of unattached competitors.
Admission and parking is free for the event. All running events will be held in Titan Field, located north of Calihan Hall at McNichols and Fairfield. All throws will be held at ring located in northwest corner of campus behind Buysse Ballpark.
