Men’s Track Ends Raleigh Relays With Record-Breaking Event

Final Results

Behind a record-breaking performance by the Titan 4x200m relay squad, the UDM men's track and field team closed out its outdoor season opener at the Reebok Raleigh Relays with some strong performances on Saturday.

The Detroit quartet of junior Sam Jones (Detroit, MI/U-D Jesuit), sophomore Earnest Cleary (Detroit, MI/Ferndale) and freshmen Vushaun Landrum (Windsor, ON/Sandwich Secondary) and Joe LaRocca (Eastpointe, MI/De LaSalle Collegiate) earned the school record in the 4x200m with a time of 1:28.70, good for 14th place.

The Titans also had a great run in the 4x100m as senior John LaRocca (Eastpointe, MI/De LaSalle Collegiate) teamed with Cleary, Landrum and Jones for a time of 42.77, the third-best time in school history as well as just .02 off of 2008's top time, to take 13th place.

Another Titan relay also turned in a top 20 showing as the 4x800m, composed of juniors Alex Gould (Comstock Park, MI/Comstock Park) and Kevin Wozniak (Dearborn, MI/Edsel Ford) and sophomores Brian Greenhoe (Sand Lake, MI/Grant) and Matt Mahler (Thorold, ON/Denis Morris Catholic), claimed 16th with a time of 7:53.00.

Individually, two Titans set personal records in sophomores Pat Liederbach (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey) and Kevin Smalley (Gladwin, MI/Gladwin). Liederbach was 12th in the men's 1500m Section I race in 3:54.44, making it just the fourth sub-3:55 time in UDM annals behind Corey Stedman (3:50.98 in 1999), head coach Guy Murray (3:52.21 in 1989) and Dan Zinser (3:55.39 in 2006).

Smalley bested his career mark in the steeplechase by 22 seconds, placing 13th in the event in 10:07.17.

Detroit returns to action on Friday as UDM hosts the Detroit Track & Field Classic at Titan Field. Among the events on the schedule is the Elite Mile, presented by RunMichigan.com, which will feature 2008 Canadian Olympian Nate Brannen taking part in the race.
