Titans Extinguish Flames, 63-55

Box Score (in pdf)

Three Titans scored in double figures to help propel Detroit to a 63-55 victory over visiting UIC in a Horizon League match-up Thursday evening at Calihan Hall. UDM improves to 10-18 overall (6-11 HL), while the Flames fall to 14-14 on the year (8-9). With the win, the Titans secure eighth place in the conference and will host No. 9 Loyola in the first round of the Horizon League Championship on March 9 at 7 p.m.

Detroit senior Sandi Brown (Toledo, OH/Start) ended with a game-high 21 points, while senior Zemora Davis (Detroit, MI/Community) added 14 for the Titans after shooting 7-of-12 from the field. Freshman Jalesa Jones (Detroit/Pershing) was perfect from the line (4-of-4) and finished with 10 points in 33 minutes of action.

With the score tied at 10 five minutes into the contest, the Titans followed with a 13-4 scoring run to push ahead of the Flames and UDM never relinquished its lead the remainder of the game. Brown scored nine during this span and Davis capped off the scoring spurt with a midrange jumper off an assist from junior Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian) to put the score at 23-14 (5:46).

UIC responded with eight unanswered points to pull within one at the 2:58 mark (23-22), but Brown dished out a pass to freshman Jaleesa Trussell (Racine, WI/Case) with just over a minute remaining, who then netted a field goal to snap Detroit's scoring drought. Senior Meghan Hutchens hit a jumper to add to the Flames point total, but the Titans took a 25-24 advantage with them into halftime.

Detroit opened up the second stanza on a 10-0 scoring run in a 3:38 span for its largest lead of the contest, with Jones scoring the last basket to put the score at 35-24. The Flames were able to pull within four on three occasions, with the last coming at 4:36 after Hutchens hit a jumper, but that was the closest UIC would get to Detroit the remainder of the contest.

Davis gave the Titans a double digit lead again with just over two minutes left after netting a layup off an assist from freshman Lauren Allen (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester) to have the scoreboard read 58-48.

Detroit shot 45 percent on the night (24-of-53), while UIC had a 22-of-63 showing from the field (35 percent). The Flames won the battle of the boards, 41-32, while steals were even at nine a piece.

The Titans will wrap-up the regular season on March 7 against Loyola on Senior Day at Calihan Hall. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
