HLN Video Highlights

With UDM down by two, senior Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian) launched one from beyond the arc as time expired to lift Detroit (5-10, 3-1 HL) to a dramatic 66-65 victory over visiting UIC (6-10, 3-2 HL) in a Horizon League match-up Thursday evening for the Titans' third straight win at Calihan Hall.

With five seconds reading on the clock, Detroit sophomore Lauren Allen (Rochester, MI/Rochester) had the throw-in at the other end of the court and got the ball out of her hands just in time to freshman Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing), who then fed a pass to Mulroy and watched as the ball went through the net.

"We run that play a thousand times in shootaround,” said Mulroy. “Last year, at UIC, I was given the opportunity to shoot it at the top of the key for the win and it didn't go down, so I had to make it this time. The pass from Jalesa came in a little high, so I just caught it and chucked it and it worked."

The score was tied at 63 with 21 seconds left and UIC responded with sophomore Jasmine Bailey making both of her free throw attempts to take a two-point lead with six seconds left, setting up Mulroy's heroics.

Mulroy made all five attempts from long range and only missed one basket all night as she shot 5-of-6 from the field and ended with a 17 points. She now stands seventh all-time in Detroit's record books with 113 career 3-pointers.

Detroit sophomore Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) netted a game-high 18 points and grabbed a team second-best eight rebounds, while Allen ended with 10 points and dished out a game-high seven assists. Jones was close to double figure points as she ended with nine and also added five helpers and two steals in the win.

Four Flames scored in double figures with freshman Taylor Foulks coming off the bench to tie senior Cassie Johnson for a team-best 15 points, while Bailey ended with a double-double with a game-high 11 rebounds, along with 13 points.

Detroit's largest lead of the contest was nine, which came at the 11:40 mark of the second half after Jones made a lay-up to put the score at 47-38, and UIC's largest advantage came with just under four minutes left in the first when the scoreboard read 25-18.

The Titans will return to action when they host Loyola on Saturday at 2 p.m.
