The Detroit men's basketball team rallied from a 13-point second half deficit, but junior
Xavier Keeling's game winning 3-point try was just too strong as the Titans fell at Green Bay, 74-72, on Saturday evening at the Resch Center.
The loss drops UDM to 12-7 on the season and 5-3 in the Horizon League. It was also the fifth loss of the year for the Titans by four points or less. Green Bay improved to 13-6, 6-2 in league play.
Sophomore
Chase Simon had his third straight game with 20+ points ending with a team-high 24 markers. In the last three games, the Detroit native is averaging 26.7 ppg. He also added five rebounds and three assists.
Detroit was down by two with 12 seconds left on the clock when freshman
Donavan Foster drove the lane, but his shot was blocked and went off a Green Bay player. With four seconds left, Keeling took the inbounds pass and got a good look in hoisting up the potential game winner as time expired.
UDM fought back from a 13-point deficit after the Phoenix scored five straight out of the locker room to take a 40-27 advantage. The Titans would cut it to two, 62-60, with five minutes left, but the home team ran off a 9-2 spurt to take a 71-62 lead with 3:33 left in the game
The Titans then went on an 8-0 run in the next three minutes to get within one with just 26 seconds left. After a Simon layup, Green Bay made a pair from the line to push the deficit back to three. Simon, once again, would made it a one-point game, 73-72, with a layup off an offensive rebound, before a Phoenix charity shot set up the last possession.
Senior
Thomas Kennedy netted 11 points, while sophomore
Eli Holman had eight points, six rebounds and a game-best five blocks. Keeling posted six points and five boards and Foster provided some scoring off the bench with nine points. Detroit shot over 50 percent for the second straight game ending at 57 percent.
Green Bay was led by Rahmon Fletcher's 24 points, with Bryquis Perine adding 21.
The red, white and blue will now have a few extra days off as they play just one game next week as the Titans come back home to host Wright State on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The gamewill be televised live by FOX Sports Detroit. It will be a festive day with Homecoming as well as the induction of the 10-member 2010 Hall of Fame class.
