Behind senior
Brigid Mulroy's (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian) game-high 19-point effort and sophomore
Yar Shayok's (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) career-high 16 rebounds, the Detroit women's basketball team edged Loyola, 53-50, in a Horizon League match-up Saturday afternoon for the Titans' fourth consecutive win at Calihan Hall.
Mulroy had a 5-of-9 showing from beyond the arc and made all four attempts at the line, while Shayok added nine points and also dished out a career-high five assists.
“We knew Loyola was going to be a physical team and have good outside shooters and we're very happy to have pulled out the win out today,” said Detroit head coach
Autumn Rademacher.
With 10:55 remaining in the game, Mulroy was fouled after the shot and then a technical was called on the Ramblers. Mulroy made both attempts for the technical and then converted a one-and-one to put the score at 37-34 in favor of the Titans. The next three baskets were 3-pointers, one made by Detroit sophomore
Lauren Allen (Rochester, MI) and the other two netted by LUC senior Jessica Hylton to knot the game at 40 with just over eight minutes left in the contest.
Detroit took over and led the rest of the game, with its largest lead of eight (48-40) happening with just over six minutes left after sophomore
Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) made both of her free throw attempts. Senior Maggie McCloskey pulled Loyola within two with 35 seconds on the clock and Jones made one free throw to give UDM a three-point cushion. McClosky had two attempts from beyond the arc to tie it in the closing seconds, but neither shot made it through the net.
Down by 11 at the 6:25 mark of the first half, Detroit responded with 12 unanswered points to pull ahead of the Ramblers, 20-19. During that span, junior
Tayler Langham (Plymouth, MI/Salem) scored four of Detroit's points and Mulroy netted one of her 3-pointers. Allen's jumper in the closing minute tied the game at 22, which was the score at the break.
The Titans will return to the road on Thursday when they face Valparaiso at the Athletics-Recreation Center at 8:05 p.m.
