Down by six to Valparaiso with 38 seconds left in regulation, the Titans clawed back to send the game into overtime and Detroit (7-10, 5-1 HL) ended up defeating the Crusaders (5-12, 2-4) by 72-70 at the Athletics-Recreation Center in a Horizon League match-up Thursday evening. With a Green Bay loss earlier in the evening, Detroit is now tied with the Phoenix for first place in the conference.
Sophomore
Sierra Spaude (Sturgeon Bay, WI) hit a 3-pointer to pull UDM within two (65-63) with 23 seconds on the clock and, with 15 seconds remaining in regulation, Valpo was inbounding the ball in front of Detroit's bench. However, Detroit sophomore
Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing), who ended with a career-high six steals, got her hand on it and fed the ball to sophomore
Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) who hit a lay-up to tie the game.
Neither team was able to score in the remaining seconds, which sent the contest into an extra session.
Detroit scored the first seven points of overtime, the first five of which came from freshman
Demeisha Fambro (Detroit, MI/Crockett Tech), and the final two came from sophomore
Lauren Allen (Rochester, MI/Rochester). After Valpo pulled within two, Allen got a shot off, got her own offensive rebound and handed the ball to Jones, who was fouled with three seconds left. Jones missed the front end of a one-and-one situation, but solid defense from Detroit did not allow Valpo a chance to get a shot off and helped secure the Titans' fifth Horizon League win.
Four Titans scored in double figures with senior
Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian) leading the way with 19 after shooting 6-of-9 from the field and a flawless 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Fambro came off the bench to add 15, while Shayok and Allen each ended with 10 points. Shayok tied for a game-best nine rebounds, while Jones tied her season-high of seven assists.
Valpo also had four players score in double digits with senior Lauren Kenney coming off the bench to score a game-high 24 points and junior Kelly Watts added 14.
UDM had a 47 percent showing from the field (29-of-62), while Valpo shot 24-of-71 on the night. The Crusaders made 17 of their 24 free throw attempts, while the Titans made nine of their 14 tries.
Detroit has won six of its past seven games and has won three straight heading into the Titans' 2 p.m. match-up at Butler on Saturday.
