Detroit's women's basketball team dropped a 65-44 decision to Butler in a Horizon League match-up at Hinkle Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon.
In the opening half, senior
Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian), who tied sophomore
Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) for a team-best 10 points, cut Detroit's deficit to six after sinking one from long range off an assist from sophomore
Lauren Allen (Rochester, MI/Rochester). However, Butler responded with four unanswered points to take a 25-15 advantage with just over four minutes left in the stanza.
Sophomore
Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing), who finished with nine points, and freshman
Cherridy Thornton (Detroit, MI/Cody) scored the final three points for the Titans in the half, but the Bulldogs led, 30-18, at the break.
Shayok, who ended with a game second-best eight rebounds, hit a lay-up with help from Mulroy at the 14:41 mark of the second half to pull Detroit within 10 (36-26), but the Bulldogs maintained control as they led by double digits the remainder of the contest.
Butler (12-6, 5-2 HL) senior Melanie Thornton scored a game-best 17 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, while Alyssa Pittman came off the bench to net 16 points.
The Titans (7-11, 5-2 HL) will return to action when they host Youngstown State on Thursday for the first of four straight home games. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m., and will precede a Detroit men's home game versus Loyola at 7:05 p.m.
