The List of Our Riders
216 riders…36 hours…4 causes… As Titan men's basketball coach Ray McCallum began pedaling a stationary bike at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning, the inaugural "Cardio for a Cause," a fundraiser to benefit Titan Athletics and three other special charities, got underway in Calihan Hall's Larry Bleach Fitness Center.
McCallum was the first of 216 participants, each of whom will pedal for 10 minutes throughout Wednesday and Thursday, and he passed off to women's basketball player Brigid Mulroy for the second shift. The event's final rider, Nate Robertson of the Detroit Tigers, will take the 8:20-8:30 p.m. shift during the UDM men's basketball game vs. Loyola on Thursday night, and will also sign autographs for Titan fans while at Calihan Hall.
Members of the local media, former Titan athletes like Earl Cureton and other celebrities, including one-time Red Wing Jason Woolley, are all taking a turn to help support "Cardio for a Cause." Current Titan student-athletes and UDM staff members will log most of the hours during the fundraiser.
During the final four hours, riders will be participating courtside in the main arena to generate additional exposure with fans at the Titan men's and women's basketball games. Fans who have not already contributed or sponsored a rider can make a donation in person.
All money raised will go to benefit the Titan Strength and Conditioning program, Children's Hospital of Michigan, the V Foundation for Cancer Research and the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. Anyone wishing to sponsor a student-athlete, coach or athletics staff member can do so by calling Titan Athletics at (313) 993-1700, or by printing a gift card located at the top of this story.
