HLN Video Highlights

Behind a game-high 20-point performance by Detroit sophomore Sierra Spaude (Sturgeon Bay, WI/Sturgeon Bay) and three other Titans scoring in double figures, UDM (8-11, 6-2 HL) defeated Youngstown State (0-19, 0-8 HL) by 80-44 in a Horizon League match-up Thursday evening at Calihan Hall. This marks the Titans' highest-scoring output thus far this season and their fifth straight home victory.

The tone was set early on as senior Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian), who ended with a game second-best 15 points, hit one from beyond the arc just 12 seconds into the game, the first of 11 treys Detroit netted on the night to set a new season-high of 3-pointers made in a single contest.

The Titans dominated the entire contest, leading by double digits from the 16:33 mark (12-2) on and they had their largest lead of the first stanza with just over four minutes remaining after freshman Demeisha Fambro (Detroit, MI/Crockett Tech) netted a 3-pointer with help from Spaude to put the score at 31-9.

YSU sophomore Makala Gasparek made two free throws in the closing seconds, but UDM had a 19-point advantage at the break (36-17). The 17 points is the least amount of points an opponent has been held to in an opening half in head coach Autumn Rademacher's tenure.

Sophomore Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest), who collected her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 caroms, added two points early on in the second half for the Titans to put the score at 41-19. Fambro sank one from long range off an assist from sophomore Lauren Allen (Rochester, MI/Rochester) with just over five minutes remaining to give Detroit its largest lead of the contest (74-35). Fambro ended with 15 points, which included making all three 3-point attempts.

The Titans owned the boards as they grabbed 53 compared to 32 from YSU and Detroit had a 20-2 advantage in assists. UDM shot 45 percent from the field, while the Penguins had a 12-of-56 showing on the night.

With Cleveland State dropping a 60-58 decision to Wright State in Dayton, OH, Detroit is tied for first in the HL with Green Bay.

The Titans will return to action when they host Cleveland State on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 1:30 p.m. The women's game precedes a Detroit men's match-up against UIC, which has a 4 p.m. tip.
