University of Detroit Mercy's women's basketball team dropped a 71-46 decision to #18 Green Bay in a Horizon League match-up at the Kress Center in Green Bay, WI, Saturday afternoon.
The first 10 minutes of the game was kept close as the score was tied five times, with the last happening after Detroit sophomore
Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) hit a lay-up off an assist from sophomore
Lauren Allen (Rochester, MI/Rochester) to knot the score at 12. Green Bay responded with a 13-2 run, which was halted after freshman
Kassandra Hooten (Moorhead, MN/Moorhead) made a lay-up with help from freshman
Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) to pull Detroit within nine, 25-16, at the 5:50 mark.
In the closing minutes of the first half, Allen, who ended with a team-high 11 points, made back-to-back treys with the second bringing Detroit within 11 of the Phoenix (33-22). Junior
Tayler Langham (Plymouth, MI/Salem) was the last to score of the opening stanza with two made free throws, but the Phoenix went into the break with a 38-24 advantage.
Green Bay opened up the second half with eight unanswered points before Shayok, who tied with Allen for a team-best six rebounds, scored two from under the basket off an assist from Hooten. The Phoenix led by at least 20 points the rest of the game and had its largest lead of 30 twice, with the last with just under two minutes remaining after Breannah Ranger hit a midrange jumper.
Three Green Bay players scored in double figures with Kayla Tetschlag netting a game-high 19 points, along with a game-best eight rebounds. Hannah Quilling added 14 for Green Bay, while Lydia Bauer came off the bench to end with 11 points.
Detroit shot 44 percent (16-of-36), while Green Bay (15-0, 4-0 HL) had a 28-of-64 showing on the day and the Titans outrebounded the Phoenix, 33-30.
The Titans (4-10, 3-1 HL) will return to action when they host UIC at Calihan Hall on Thursday at 7 p.m.
