Box Score
The Titans find themselves in first place after a 1-0 win over Cleveland State at home on Sunday.
Detroit (6-4-4/3-1-1 HL) jumps into first place in the Horizon League with the win over the Vikings (7-6-2/3-2-0 HL) after first place Milwaukee (7-5-2/3-1-0 HL) lost 1-0 to Butler (5-9-0/3-1-0 HL) in other conference action on the day.
Detroit won on a goal from junior
Lauren Roffey (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) in the 20th minute of play when sophomore
Rebekah Dornbos (Midland, MI/Midland) played a free kick from the right side. Dornbos played the ball inside the six-yard box where Roffey tipped the ball into the net for the only goal of the game.
Freshman goalkeeper
Nora Abolins (Demorestville, ON/Centennial) recorded two saves and posted her Horizon League best sixth overall shutout. In five conference games, Abolins is 3-1-1 with three shutouts, a 0.57 goals against average and an .833 save percentage.
“I thought earlier in the game in the first 20 minutes or so, Cleveland State took it to us and we were fortunate enough not to go down 1-0,” said head coach
Mike Lupenec.
“In the second half, I thought we settled down and started playing better with our feet and containing them defensively because our bench came in and gave us some energy. We started controlling the game more and getting opportunities going the other way.”
Detroit held its own after a few close calls. In the opening 20 minutes, some physical play in the penalty area went on without a call as CSU drove the ball inside. The Vikings also had a goal called back early in the second half due to an offside call.
“There was a close tackle early that maybe should have been a penalty shot and fortunately for us, the ref didn't call it or see it,” said Lupenec.
The Titans have three conference games remaining with Butler coming to Detroit next Sunday (Oct. 17) and the final two games of the season at Milwaukee and at Green Bay on Oct. 22 and 24, respectively.
“I'm proud of what the girls did this weekend. We set out for two victories and we came away with two big wins. This is a huge game for us to win over this team after they only lost one conference game before today,” added Lupenec.
The Titans' next opponent will be Marygrove College this Thursday in the last non-conference game of the 2010 season. The game is scheduled for 4:00 p.m., at Titan Field.
