Women's Soccer Wins 8-0

Box Score

DETROIT, Mich. - The Titans hosted Marygrove this afternoon and won by a score of 8-0.

Six different players tallied a goal for Detroit (7-4-4/3-1-1 Horizon League) as the team registered its highest goal total of the season over the Mustangs (5-7-0).

“It's nice to see everyone play and have the team play together and have different opportunities to see what other people can do,” said sophomore Rebekah Dornbos (Midland, MI/Midland).

Freshman goalkeeper Emily Oberheim (Springfield, VA/Lee) played 21 minutes in the field in the second half and scored the team's eighth goal in the final minute of the game. Her shot from 12 yards out beat the keeper on the left side for her first career goal.

Junior Alexandra Suschak (Brecksville, OH/Brecksville) scored the first goal of the day for Detroit and junior Alison Suschak (Brecksville, OH/Brecksville) had the second. After that, junior Rebecca Pidgeon (Ann Arbor, MI/Huron) and freshman Kaitlyn Quarrell (Thunder Bay, ON/St. Ignatius) each scored their second goal of the season.

Dornbos had the fifth goal for the Titans on a penalty kick. That was followed by two more from sophomore Nina Carter (Clinton Twp., MI/Chippewa Valley) who posted her fourth and fifth tallies of the year.

“It wasn't the hardest game we played but we needed to play together to make sure we had a win and some confidence before going in two of our hardest games,” added Dornbos.

Freshman goalkeeper Nora Abolins (Demorestville, ON/Centennial) did not need to make a save in recording her seventh shutout of the year and the team's eighth overall. The Titan record for most team shutouts in one season is nine which was set in 2005 when Katie Fortenberry had nine.

The Titans face a Butler team this Sunday who handed reigning Horizon League champion Milwaukee a 1-0 loss last Sunday. Detroit will finish the regular season with a trip to Wisconsin to play at Milwaukee on Oct. 22 and Green Bay on Oct. 24.

“I'm glad we came out and played well today because our toughest test is yet to come as we head into our final conference games,” said head coach Mike Lupenec.

The Titans' next game is the last regular season home game of the 2010 season. The game is scheduled for this Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
