MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Detroit women's soccer team was upended by the defending Horizon League champions as the Titans fell to Milwaukee, 3-0, on Friday night from Engelmann Field.
With the win, Milwaukee (10-5-2/6-1-0 Horizon League) clinched at least a share of the conference regular season championship. Despite the setback, Detroit (7-6-4/3-3-1 HL) clinched a playoff berth due to a 3-0 win for Wright State over Green Bay. The Horizon League tournament teams have now been decided, but with one game left on the regular season schedule, the only thing still to be determined are the final seedings.
Detroit nearly scored right from the start as freshman
Abby McCollum (La Salle, MI/Monroe) had a great opportunity 21 seconds into the game. The Milwaukee goalkeeper was caught out of the goal and McCollum had an open net, but a Milwaukee defender stepped up and made the save.
Milwaukee outshot UDM 8-2 in the first half and took a 1-0 lead as Sarah Hagen added to her Horizon League career best with a tally at the 9:12 mark. Sara Stern added another in the final three minutes of the opening frame to give the Panthers a 2-0 advantage.
“We played a good team tonight and it showed,” said head coach
Mike Lupenec. "Milwaukee has always been tough to beat, especially at home. They played a great game tonight. "
In the second half, Hagen added her second of the evening off a corner kick before the skies opened up and brought rain drops until the final horn sounded.
With one game left, Detroit can finish as high as fourth in the league, which would give the Titans a home playoff game next week. The top three seeds will belong to Butler, Cleveland State and Milwaukee, although their seeds will come down to Sunday's results.
“It's nice to be back in the Horizon League tournament. We missed out on it last year so I'm glad to get back in and have a chance against some of these teams,” added Lupenec.
The next game for the Titans will be Sunday at Green Bay. The regular-season finale is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
