On Tap: The Detroit Titans officially open their 2010-11 campaign Saturday, travelling to New Mexico for a showdown with the Lobos. The contest will be the first official game in "the Pit" since it's undergone $60-million dollars in renovations.
Titans Earn Preseason Accolades: The Horizon League Preseason All-League Teams were led by a pair of Butler returnees who helped the Bulldogs march all the way to the NCAA Championship game last season. Shelvin Mack was the top vote-getter for League Player of the Year. Detroit had two players among the nominees with
Eli Holman and
Chase Simon each garnering second team recognition. Holman was the league leader in rebounds (8.9 rpg) and blocked shots (2.5 bpg) a year ago and Simon led the Titans with a 14.0 scoring average.
Ties to New Mexico:
*Junior
Chase Simon's cousin, Randy Brown, was a rival of the Lobos, playing for New Mexico State and later for three NBA teams.
*Former Titan Legend (1975-78) and NBA-er Terry Tyler now makes his home in the Land of Enchantment.
Cal-liste of our Worries: Jason Calliste got hot in the exhibition win over Lake Superior State Saturday. The sophomore hit 8-of-12 three-pointers, including 5-of-6 in the second half. He scored a game-high 34 points in the blowout.
Double-doubles: A pair of Titans posted double-doubles in the exhibition campaign. Junior post
Eli Holman scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the win over Hillsdale. In Saturday's win over Lake Superior State, freshman guard
Ray McCallum tallied 22 points and 10 assists.
Quite a Stretch: Detroit will have three of its first four games away from Calihan Hall and all against very formidable opponents. The Titans open at New Mexico, a No. 3 seed in last season's NCAA tourney and a 30-win team. They then travel back across the country to Syracuse, for a showdown with preseason's No. 13th-ranked Orange. After the home opener on Nov. 19, UDM then heads to Mississippi State on Nov. 22.
Titans on TV: Detroit will be televised a minumum of 11 times this season across FOX Sports Detroit, the ESPN family of networks and WADL. Check the schedule page for complete details on games shown.
Detroit Titan Court Report: FOX Sports Detroit will produce and air “Detroit Titan Court Report”, a monthly all-access look at the UDM program. Four different episodes will be broadcast on the regional cable sports network—all in High Definition— with several re-airs throughout FSD's lineup. The 30-minute show, hosted by Mickey York, will provide a look inside the Titan program with player features, interviews, highlights and much more. The show is in conjunction with a four-game package announced earlier this Fall and will first air on Nov. 14.
Detroit Signs Point Guard in Early Signing Period: Head Men's Basketball Coach
Ray McCallum announced the signing of P.J. Boutte to a National Letter of Intent Wednesday afternoon in the first day of the NCAA's early signing period. Boutte is a quick, 5-foot-8 point guard who hails from Indianapolis, Ind. (T.C. Howe). Boutte led the state of Indiana in assists as junior, tallying 9.0 helpers per contest and racking-up over 200 for the season. That total was 58 more than the nearest player in that category and he also finished with 82 steals, tied for most in the Hoosier state.
