Detroit -- A balanced offensive attack and a ferocious defensive effort was on display right from the very start as the Detroit women's basketball team moved to 3-0 with a 66-53 victory over Western Michigan on Friday evening at Calihan Hall.
The win marked the first time since the 1991-92 season that the Titans have started the year with three straight wins.
Sophomore
Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) recorded her 11th career double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds. The reigning HL Newcomer of the Year was 9-of-17 from the field. Junior
Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) had 10 points, eight assists, six rebounds and three steals, while sophomore
Demeisha Fambro (Detroit, MI/Crockett Tech) added 12 points and three rebounds.
Detroit outrebounded the Broncos, 42-29, in the game, while forcing 18 WMU turnovers. UDM held WMU to just 26 percent from the field in the first half, while Detroit hit 7 of its first 11 shots ending the game at 46 percent shooting.
The Titans started the game on a 12-2 run in the first four minutes as all five Titan starters contributed a basket early. The lead opened up to 24-8 with 7:48 remaining as Shayok tied her season high of nine rebounds with 5:47 left in the first. Seven Titans scored at that point and the team was shooting 10-of-17 (59%) from the field at that point.
Western Michigan (1-2) finished 7-of-27 (26%) in the first half and Detroit took a 32-17 lead into the locker room.
The Titans saw the Broncos cut the lead to 12 (38-26) five minutes into the second stanza, but Detroit did not let them get any closer pushing its advantage to as many as 19 again on two occasions, the latest as Shayok got inside for a basket to give UDM a 47-28 lead.
Western Michigan had one final run left cutting the Titan lead to nine, 56-47, with 5:16 left in the contest, but back-to-back baskets by Shayok and senior
Tayler Langham (Plymouth, MI/Salem) once again gave the red, white and blue a double-digit lead.
The women return to action this Sunday as they travel to East Lansing for a showdown with No.25/22 Michigan State. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m., with the contest televised online by the BigTenNetwork.com.
Game Notes:
WXYZ sports anchor Tom Leyden sang the National Anthem prior to the women's game this evening…The 17 points Detroit allowed in the first half was the lowest since UDM allowed 17 against Youngstown State last season in an 80-44 victory…16 of the Titan's 32 first-half points came off of turnovers…Detroit outrebounded an opponent for the first time this season.
