Demeisha Fambro (Detroit, MI/Crockett Tech) had a team-high 14 points, and sophomore
Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) posted her second-straight double double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, but it was not enough as the Titans fell on the road to No. 25/22 Michigan State, 82-42.
The loss drops UDM to 3-1 on the year, while the Spartans improved to 3-1.
Fambro's 14 points gave her four straight games in double figures to start the season. She also grabbed four rebounds. Junior
Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) had six points and five rebounds, while senior
Tayler Langham (Plymouth, MI/Salem) added five points and junior
Talicia Washington (Auburn Hills, MI/Avondale) pulled down five rebounds off the bench.
Both teams struggled shooting at the start of the contest, with Detroit holding Michigan State to just 5-of-18 from the field in the first 11 minutes of the game.
The Titans trailed by six, 10-4, when Shayok posted back-to-back baskets. Detroit then turned MSU away on three-straight possessions when junior
Lauren Allen (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester) came up with an offensive rebound and found Langham for a 3-pointer to give the red, white and blue an 11-10 lead with 11:15 left in the half.
The Spartans reclaimed the lead with four straight points, but once again the Titans fought back First, Langham found Fambro, who connected on a triple. After both teams went scoreless for two minutes, UDM jumped back on top by one, 16-15, as an offensive board by Shayok kept the Titans possession alive and Jones finished it with a layup.
Detroit was right there with State until a 16-4 run to end the first period gave the home team a 35-22 lead at the half.
Things then got away from UDM in the second stanza as Michigan State pulled away for the win.
UDM will have one final game before Thanksgiving Holiday as the Titans make the short trek to Bowling Green, Ohio, to face the Falcons on Wednesday. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
