DETROIT – The men's soccer team will enter the 2010 Horizon League Tournament as the five-seed. Detroit ended the regular season with an overall record of 8-8-2, including a 4-4 mark in league play. They will face Cleveland State in the first round of the tournament at Krenzler Field on Tuesday. The match begins at 7:00 p.m.
The first round of the Horizon League Tournament will feature the Titans playing the Vikings (8-9-1, 4-3-1 HL), and the Milwaukee Panthers (6-9-3, 4-4 HL) traveling to Chicago, Ill. to play Loyola (4-10-2, 4-3-1 HL). Milwaukee is the six-seed in the tournament because Detroit defeated them 2-1 during the regular season giving them the head-to-head tiebreaker. Also the Ramblers enter the tournament as the three-seed by holding the tiebreaker over Cleveland State. The #6 Butler Bulldogs (15-0-2, 7-0-1 HL) hold the top seed with Green Bay (12-4-1, 6-2 HL) at second. Both Butler and Green Bay receive first round byes in the tournament. The Titans have put together a successful season in 2010. Head coach
Nicholas Deren has guided the team to their highest win total since the 2005 season. Newcomer
Ya Ya Toure (Ypsilanti, MI, Willow Run (Schoolcraft) has been an impact player for the Titans leading the team with 18 points. Toure has scored a team-high eight goals on the year and also added two assists.
Sam Seppo (Port Huron, MI, Port Huron) has also been a scoring threat for Detroit. The junior is second on the team with six goals.
Freshman
Adam Bedell (Livonia, MI, Churchill) has been a difference maker during the regular season. Bedell used his throw-in ability to record a team-high eight assists for Detroit.
Kevin Pinkos (Clarkston, MI, Clarkston) and
Pat Lepera (Windsor, ON, St. Joseph's Catholic) also impacted the team with seven points each. Pinkos has scored three goals to go along with an assist, while Lepera is currently second on the team with five assists.
Detroit got off to a slow start after playing a tough non-conference schedule. Their first win of the year came against Duquesne on Sept. 18. After the 3-2 win over the Dukes, Detroit entered league play with a trip to Chicago. The Titans fell 1-0 to Loyola, but ended the weekend with a 3-2 win over UIC. The following weekend UDM earned an important 2-1 victory over Milwaukee helping them earn the five-seed in the HL Tournament. Another big win during the regular season came when the Titans defeated Cleveland State 2-0 at Titan Field on Oct. 15. Toure and Seppo each scored a goal in the game against the Vikings. Toure scored an unassisted breakaway goal, and Seppo connected on a Bedell throw-in to secure the 2-0 victory. Detroit leads the all-time series over Cleveland State 14-6-1.
The Vikings come into Tuesday's match on a hot streak. Cleveland State ended the month of October by defeating top-ranked Akron 2-1. They followed that performance with a 0-0 tie against #6 Butler in their Horizon League season finale. Cleveland State has a balanced offensive attack as four players ended the regular season with eight points. Manual Conde, Aaron Adkins, John Wargo, and Aslinn Rodas all scored three goals and recorded two assists for the Vikings. Rodas and Jordan Hart each found the back of the net to upset then #1 Akron on Oct. 30.
