DETROIT – Freshman Senee Shearer (Detroit, MI/Pershing) led four Titans in double digits with 15 points as the Detroit women's basketball team used an explosive first-half run to clip the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals, 72-52, in exhibition action on Monday night.

Shearer was 6-of-9 from the field, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. She also pulled down five boards and handed out a pair of assists.

Sophomore Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) tallied 13 points and six rebounds, while sophomores Dominique Dixon (Detroit, MI/Renaissance) and Demeisha Fambro (Detroit, MI/Crockett Tech) netted 10 apiece. Fambro also accounted for three assists and three steals and Dixon added five caroms and three steals.

Junior Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) ran the offense with seven assists, against just two turnovers, scoring six points and grabbing five rebounds.

A tenacious Titan defense led the way in the victory as Detroit forced Saginaw Valley into 28 turnovers, while holding the Cardinals to 27 percent from the field (15-of-55).

Both teams were a bit sluggish to start the game as SVSU missed its first five shots from the field and turned the ball over five times in the first five minutes of play, while Detroit was just 3-of-9 from the field in the span.

UDM led 9-7 with 13 ½ minutes in the first when the red, white and blue blew the game wide open with a 24-4 run over the next 11 minutes, which included an 11-0 spurt at one point, to take a commanding 33-11 advantage with three minutes left in the half. From there, Detroit took a 40-15 lead into the locker room.

With the big lead coming out of the half, both programs played pretty evenly in the second stanza as UDM cruised to the 20-point triumph.

Detroit will now get ready for the season opener this Friday as the Titans open the 2010-11 campaign at home against in-state rival Oakland. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
