FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Four Titans scored in double figures, led by sophomore Cherridy Thornton's (Detroit, MI/Frank Cody Senior) team-high 16 points and freshman Senee Shearer's (Detroit, MI/Pershing) season-high 13, but a second-half run by IPFW was too much to overcome as Detroit dropped a 78-66 decision to the Mastodons on Saturday.

Thornton was 6-of-12 from the field including a pair of 3-pointers. Senior Tayler Langham (Plymouth, MI/Salem) added 11 points and five rebounds, while junior Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) had 11 points, five rebounds and five assists in limited action due to foul trouble.

Detroit (4-5) played without the services of its top scorer Demeisha Fambro as well as starting guard Dominique Dixon.

The Titans were up by one, 34-33, when IPFW (6-3) took the lead for good with an 8-0 run to go up by seven, 41-34, with 16:31 left in the second half. Detroit would cut the deficit to one on two occasions, the latest at 46-45, but the home team rebounded to quickly build it back to a six-point lead, 52-46.

Langham would get Detroit back within three using the old-fashioned three-point play and, after an IPFW basket, junior Talicia Washington (Auburn Hills, MI/Avondale) connected on two free throws to once again make it a one-possession game, 54-51, with 8:17 left in the contest.

The Mastodons got it back to five, but a 3-pointer from Langham had the Titans thinking of another comeback as the triple cut the lead to just two, 56-54, but that was as close as UDM would get.

IPFW would eventually increase its lead to eight, 62-54. A Thornton three trimmed it to five, but that was matched at the other end as the Mastodons hit their free throws down the stretch to open up a double-digit lead.

Sophomore Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) grabbed a team-best 10 boards, while coming away with three blocks and three steals, while Washington collected seven points and seven rebounds.

It was a see-saw contest in the first half as there were 10 lead changes and two ties. The Titans were down by three, 10-7, eight minutes into the contest when the red, white and blue went on a 13-4 spurt over the next five minutes to take its biggest advantage of the game, 20-14.

IPFW would later knot the score at 20-all, before Detroit regained the lead down and took a 30-28 advantage into the half.

Detroit will have a week off as the Titans tend to finals before playing at Michigan next Saturday. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., at Crisler Arena.

Game Notes:

There were 38 fouls called in the game and each team attempted 25 free throws…Washington has not posted seven or more rebounds in four straight games now…Thornton did not score in the Titans last three games going 0-for-7 in the span…Jones fouled out of the game for the second time this season.
