ON TAP
Detroit is fresh off its first road win of the season and will look to make it a streak when it heads to Central Michigan Saturday. The nationally-televised tilt (ESPNU) will feature a pair of father-son combos. Trey Zeigler and
Ray McCallum, whom have been teammates and life-long friends, each signed to play collegiate basketball for their father last spring.
ABOUT CENTRAL MICHIGAN
The Chippewas are 2-7 on the season and have dropped their last four games. Wednesday's loss was at home to Horizon League-member Wright State, a 53-49 setback. Of the seven losses, four have come by four points or less and two have gone to overtime. Jalin Thomas is CMU's leading scorer, averaging 17.0 poins per game while Trey Zeigler adds 14.8 ppg.
BAKER'S DOZEN
Detroit head coach
Ray McCallum has an impressive record all-time against Central Michigan, winning 13 of 16 meetings with the Chips. McCallum has won both meetings between the schools in his Detroit tenure.
CENTRAL TIES
UDM Assistant Coach
Jay Smith makes his return to Central Michigan Saturday. Smith served as the Chips' head coach from 1997-2006, tallying a 95-160 mark in that span and claiming two MAC Coach of the Year honors. Junior
Chase Simon is also very familiar with Mt. Pleasant. Simon spent his freshman season as a Chippewa, appearing in 24 games, averaging 4.1 points and 1.5 rebounds per game.
ROAD WARRIOR
Junior
Nick Minnerath leads the Titans in free-throw percentage, hitting 33-of-40 freebies so far this season (.825). But, he's been especially proficient on the road, missing just twice from the line, going 13-of-15 for an .867 mark. He also leads the squad with a modest 3-for-7 clip from downtown (.429).
AMONG THE NATIONAL LEADERS
Several Titans have their names appear among the NCAA Division I leaders. Junior
Eli Holman has six double-doubles, which ranks seventh heading into this week. He also is 10th in rebounds per game (11.3) and 24th in field-goal percentage (.609).
LaMarcus Lowe, on the strength of his career-best eight blocks on Saturday at Eastern Michigan, is now 15th in the NCAA with his 2.8 blocks per game clip.
LEADING THE LEAGUE
Eli Holman leads the Horizon League in both offensive (4.1 rpg) and defensive (7.2 rpg) rebounds per game in the early going. He is also tops in field goal percentage, connecting on 60.9 percent of his shots (56-of-92) and is sixth in blocks (1.3 bpg) and 14th in scoring (13.4 ppg).
FOSTER-ING A GOOD RELATIONSHIP
Junior
Donavan Foster earned his first start of the season-- his first since his freshman campaign-- Saturday at Eastern Michigan. While Foster did struggle from the free-throw line (2-fo-8), he produced a season-high 12 points and added four steals, four assists and four rebounds.
LOWE TIDE
Junior
LaMarcus Lowe was also in the Titans' starting lineup for the first time in his career. Lowe responded with a career-high eight blocks, three of those coming in the overtime period alone. He added six points, 10 rebounds and a steal to his totals and now leads the Horizon League in blocks with 31 (total).
EAGLE-EYED
Lowe has made a habit of clipping the wings of the Eastern Michigan Eagles. As a freshman at rival Western Michigan, Lowe tallied a career-best seven blocks against EMU on Jan. 24, 2009. Saturday, Lowe swatted eight Eagle shots to etch a new personal best, again at the Convocation Center against EMU.
HORIZON LEAGUE ACCOLADES FOR RAY
Freshman
Ray McCallum earned the Horizon League's Player of the Week award for his performance Dec. 6-12. On Wednesday, McCallum buried 4-of-5 triples in a slim 71-69 defeat at Western Michigan. On Saturday, the freshman poured-in a career- and league-best 31 points in an overtime win at Eastern Michigan, 68-65. McCallum scored nine of those points in the overtime session and also grabbed a career-high eight rebounds in the win. He is the second Titan to earn the weekly honor after
Eli Holman won the award back on Nov. 29.
