Post-game press conference
PEORIA, Ill.-- Host Bradley hung-on for a hard-nosed 73-65 win over Detroit Wednesday night at Carver Arena in non-conference action. The Braves, who led by as many as a dozen, squandered the lead late but rallied in the closing minutes to snag the win.
It was a hard-fought, bloody affair. Literally.
Ray McCallum, who tallied team-highs with 15 points and nine assists, had to exit briefly in the final minute with a cut in his lip and the teams combined for 27 personal fouls in the second half. Detroit (7-6) had six players with three or more fouls and played the final possessions without one of their best perimeter defenders in
Donavan Foster, who fouled-out.
BU (6-5)-- and in particular, leading-scorer Andrew Warren-- took advantage. The Braves knocked-down 20-of-26 foul shots led by Warren's 10-for-10 effort to gain an edge. Warren's 24 points led all scorers while Dodie Dunson pitched-in 18 and Will Egolf netted 11 for the Braves.
The game started very promising for the Titans as
Jason Calliste had eight quick points and they grabbed a 12-6 advantage just over four minutes into the contest. The home team recovered by shooting well in the opening half, hitting 52.2 percent of its shots to lead by as many as 11. The Braves would take a 35-26 lead into the break.
Detroit made less than a third of its shots in the opening stanza, shooting 32.3 percent from the floor. Bradley was whistled for four fouls compared to 11 for UDM in the first 20 minutes.
With the lead at a dozen, the Titans began to chip away at the defecit. Coming out of a timeout, McCallum stole a pass and relayed to
Chris Blake, who fired home a right-handed jam to trim the margin to five at 49-44.
Eli Holman had back-to-back baskets to quiet the announced crowd of 7,781 and forced the Braves to call a timeout up 55-52 with seven-and-a-half minutes to play.
The Titans finally re-tied the score with five minutes left when Holman scored underneath to make it 59-apiece. From there, Bradley scored eight of the next nine points and had a seven-point lead with 1:15 remaining, all but sealing it.
Holman went 5-for-7 from the floor for 14 points while snaring eight rebounds for Detroit. Blake, who was playing in his first game as a Titan, chipped-in 11 points and three assists.
Detroit will take an eight-day break before its next game, returning to Horizon League play on Dec. 30 to host Green Bay.
Notes: The game was the final non-conference game until a Feb. 19 Bracket Buster game (to be determined) ... Chris Blake made his first appearance as a Titan, coming off the bench ... He became eligible following the end of the first semester ... Foster came into the game shooting 50 percent (15-of-30) from the free-throw line this season, but made good on 5-of-6 from the charity stripe in this game, part of seven second-half points .
