DETROIT -- For the second game in a row, the Detroit women's basketball team led from the very start as the Titans scored a 68-27 rout of Marygrove on Monday evening in Calihan Hall.

The 27 points allowed were the second fewest in school history, behind only the 17 Detroit yielded in an 83-17 triumph over Madonna on Feb. 22, 1978. The 41-point victory was also the largest win for the Titans since a 96-54 win over McNeese State on Dec. 14, 2005.

The defense came to play holding Marygrove to just 18 percent shooting (11-of-59) from the field and forcing 22 Mustangs' turnovers.

The victory improved Detroit to 6-5 on the season as the red, white and blue prepares to face nationally ranked Green Bay in its Horizon League opener on Friday.

A balanced Titan attack started out with an 8-0 run early and finished with 10 of 12 Detroit players who saw the floor register points. Sophomore Cherridy Thornton (Detroit, MI/Frank Cody Senior) led Detroit with 13 points and set a new career high with nine rebounds.

Detroit allowed the Mustangs (2-11) to crawl within 8-6, but sophomore Demeisha Fambro (Detroit, MI/Crockett Tech) helped Detroit pull ahead to 15-10 advantage as she scored five straight points, including two straight layups and a free throw to lead the Titan offense to its first double-digit advantage.

From that point on, Detroit would go on a 15-2 run to close out the half with a 30-12 lead as junior Britney Murphy (Saginaw, MI/Arthur Hill) scored all six of her first-half points in that stretch. Murphy played her first game as a Titan after sitting out the first half of the season due to NCAA transfer rules and finished with a quality all-around game scoring 10 points, adding five rebounds, three assists and four steals.
.
The Titans were up 30-12 at the half as nine players saw action for Detroit in the opening frame with eight scoring at least a point. The Mustangs shot just 5-of-29 from the field (17%) in the first half.

Detroit started out with 21-3 spurt to start half number two as the Mustangs had six turnovers to zero for the Titans in the first 10:31. Thornton had five points in that stretch and eight in the second half while sophomore Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) netted four points and five boards in the second frame to finish second-best on the team with eight caroms.

Detroit led by as many as 41 points and completely controlled the second half outscoring Marygrove 38-15. The Mustangs shot just 1-of-16 from three-point range in the second frame as 22 second-half Titan points came in the paint compared to just six from Marygrove. The Titans scored 30 points off the bench with Murphy and Fambro with 10 each.

The Titans will begin Horizon League play this Friday as they travel to Green Bay with tip set for 8:00 p.m.
