With just over a minute left, Detroit regained the lead over UIC and was able to hold on and end up with a 64-61 victory over the Flames on Saturday afternoon at the UIC Pavilion for the Titans' sixth straight win.
UDM (13-11, 11-2 HL) remains first in the Horizon League with the win and this marks the first time since the 2003-04 campaign that the Titans have won six consecutive contests.
With 56 seconds remaining in the game, freshman
Demeisha Fambro (Detroit, MI/Crockett Tech), who ended with 16 points, pulled down a critical rebound and sophomore
Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) ended up with the ball. Jones took advantage of the possession as she made her way through a crowd and saw her lay-up attempt circle the rim and go through the net as she was falling down, which increased Detroit's lead to three (62-59).
Soon after, with Detroit still up by two (63-61), Fambro was fouled and she sank her first free throw try, but missed a second. On UIC's next possession, senior Jessie Miller was fed the ball, but her last-ditch effort to tie the game hit the rim and Detroit was able to walk away with its 11th conference victory.
In the first half, UIC (11-13, 8-5 HL) had an 11-9 advantage early, but Detroit was then able to hold the Flames scoreless for 5:51. During that span, the Titans went on a 16-0 scoring run, with sophomore
Lauren Allen (Rochester, MI/Rochester) netting 11 of those points to push Detroit ahead, 25-11. The Titans led the rest of the stanza and took a 33-24 advantage with them at the break.
Allen poured in a team-high 17 points, which included three 3-pointers, while Jones added 11 points for Detroit and dished out a game-high five assists. In addition,
Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) scored nine and grabbed a game-best 12 caroms.
UIC sophomore Jasmine Bailey collected a double-double with 11 rebounds, along with a game-high 19 points.
Detroit shot 43 percent from the field, which included a 6-of-15 showing from 3-point range, while UIC shot 23-of-61 on the night and missed all 14 tries from beyond the arc. The Flames edged out the Titans on the boards, 38-36, while assists were even at 12 a piece.
The Titans will return to action when they host Butler on Thursday at 7 p.m.
