Despite senior
Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian) netting six 3-pointers and leading all scorers with 22 points, Detroit dropped a 72-62 decision to Butler in a Horizon League match-up Thursday evening at Calihan Hall.
Despite the loss, Detroit (13-12, 11-3 HL) still holds on to a half-game lead in the Horizon League standings.
In the middle of the second half, Mulroy nailed three straight baskets from long range to give Detroit a 54-50 advantage and freshman
Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing), who tied her season-high of seven helpers, earned an assist on each of those baskets. Butler pulled ahead again, 55-54, but the Titans responded with six unanswered points to take their largest lead of the contest. Shortly after, sophomore
Lauren Allen (Rochester, MI/Rochester) hit the front end of a one-and-one situation to give UDM a 61-59 advantage, but the Bulldogs ended the contest on a 13-1 run to clinch the win.
The Titans scored seven unanswered points in the closing minutes of the first half, but BU junior Alyssa Pittman drained a 3-pointer as time expired to give the Bulldogs (17-7, 10-3) a 33-31 advantage at the break.
Mulroy tied her career-high of made treys with six, while Jones matched her personal-best of 17 points. In addition, sophomore
Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) tallied her ninth double-double of the season as she tied a team-high 13 rebounds and added 11 points for the Titans.
Butler senior Melanie Thornton also collected a double-double with team-highs in points and rebounds with 17 and 13, respectively.
Detroit shot 40 percent on the night (23-of-58), while Butler had a 25-of-57 showing (44 percent).
Prior to Thursday night, UDM had won six consecutive games and eight straight contests at Calihan, with its last loss at home coming on Dec. 19 against Michigan.
Next up for the Titans is a match-up against Valparaiso at Calihan Hall on Saturday at 1 p.m. Prior to tip, Mulroy, the lone senior, will be honored for all of her hard work and dedication to UDM's basketball program.
