Post-game reactions from Autumn Rademacher and Lauren Allen
Sophomore
Lauren Allen (Rochester, MI/Rochester) scored a career-high 19 points and four other Titans posted double figures to help secure a 72-65 win over Milwaukee Saturday afternoon.
With the victory, Detroit (11-11, 9-2) remains all alone in first place in the Horizon League and has now won nine straight games at Calihan Hall.
UDM senior
Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian) was second on the team with 16 points, while sophomore
Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) added 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Sophomores
Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) and
Sierra Spaude (Sturgeon Bay, WI/Sturgeon Bay) scored 12 and 10, respectively.
“We had our hands full today and we knew it wouldn't be easy because Milwaukee's a scrappy team,” said Detroit head coach
Autumn Rademacher. “We knew they were capable of playing well on the road and that's what they did. So, I'm real pleased that we were able to get out of this one on top.”
With just under three minutes remaining, Detroit was down, 61-60, but Jones answered with two points as she drove through the lane to give the Titans the lead for good. After a shot clock violation by Milwaukee (9-13, 4-7 HL), Shayok took advantage of the turnover as she accepted a pass from Jones and watched her layup attempt go through the net to put the score at 64-61.
After a missed shot by UWM freshman Sami Tucker, Spaude grabbed a defensive rebound, which led to Mulroy hitting a long basket just as the shot clock expired to extend Detroit's lead to 66-61 lead with 37 seconds left. To cap off Detroit's 8-0 scoring run, Spaude made both of her attempts at the line to give the Titans a seven-point advantage.
Mulroy helped secure Detroit's win as she was flawless from the charity stripe in the closing seconds (4-of-4) and she ended the night 6-of-6 from the line. Milwaukee senior Jodie McClain was able to get a desperation 3-pointer off as the clock expired, but that wasn't enough and the Titans were able to finish the regular season sweep of the Panthers.
Allen was able to squeak in a lay-up with 14 seconds left in the first half to give Detroit a 35-34 lead at the break.
UWM junior Ashley Imperiale led all scorers with 23 points, while junior Lindsay Laur collected a double-double for the Panthers with 17 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
Detroit shot 52 percent on the night, while the Panthers had a 27-of-69 showing (39 percent) from the field. The Titans were also impressive from the free throw line as they made 13 of their 19 attempts, while the Panthers only had six tries at the charity stripe (5-of-6).
The Titans will return to action when they face Loyola in Chicago on Thursday at 8 p.m.
