Post-Game Press Conference On Titan YouTube
HLN Video Highlights
Every Titan player in uniform scored, including four players in double figures, as the Titans shot a sizzling 71 percent in the first half en route to racing past Chicago State, 92-72, in a non-conference contest on Monday evening.
It was the most points Detroit has scored this season and the most since netting 92 in an overtime victory at Buffalo in 2007. The win moved the Titans to 15-10 on the season, while CSU dropped to 7-18.
Junior
Lamar Lee (Lafayette, IN/Jefferson) led the way with a career-high 15 points, connecting on 4-of-6 3-pointers, while senior
Thomas Kennedy (Detroit, MI/Southeastern) matched him with 15 points plus eight rebounds. Junior
Xavier Keeling (Huntsville, AL/J.O. Johnson) had 13 markers and four boards and sophomore
Chase Simon (Detroit, MI/Community) added 12 points and four assists.
“We got a good cushion from our starters, good balanced scoring and our bench did a good job in extended minutes tonight,” said head coach
Ray McCallum. “We closed out the game. We held the lead and extended the lead, which was good to see. We didn't do a good job of that in November and early December but we've been learning.”
Detroit shot 57 percent in the game, including 71 percent in the first half, where UDM made 20 of its 28 attempts from the field. The Titans also outrebounded the Cougars, 39-30, and forced 20 turnovers turning those into 32 points.
After a sluggish start that saw UDM fall behind 10-6 nearly five minutes in, the Titans took the lead for good with a 12-0 run highlighted by two Simon 3-pointers. Detroit saw the Cougars get within five, 20-15, but Simon stopped that with a jumper and Holman and Kennedy added baskets to push the lead back to double digits, 26-15.
"We struggled at the start of the games last week, so we put a big emphasis on getting out of the gate in this game,” said McCallum. “It really helps when you make your shots like we did in the first half. And that makes your defense better, too.”
Chicago State stayed around for the next few minutes but with the red, white and blue up by eight, 28-20, the Titans took complete control with an 18-5 spurt. Detroit did it once again with long range shooting as Kennedy nailed a triple and Lee hit two of his own. When it was over, the Titans took a commanding 54-33 lead at the half, the 54 points the most Detroit has scored in any half this season.
It was more of the same in the second as UDM never let up and ran its advantage to as many as 31, 84-53, before filing the 20-point victory.
UDM will now head back into Horizon League play on Thursday when Green Bay comes to town. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
