Women's Horizon League Championship Bracket
Behind a game-high 21-point effort from senior
Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian), Detroit's women's basketball team (16-13, 14-4 HL) closed out its regular season with a 58-54 victory over Wright State (10-18, 6-12 HL) at the Ervin J. Nutter Center in a Horizon League match-up Saturday afternoon. With the win, UDM clinches a No. 3 seed for the conference championship and will host No. 6 Loyola.
In the opening minutes of the second stanza, Mulroy, who tied her career-high of six treys, nailed back-to-back-to-back baskets from long range, with the last one pushing Detroit ahead by 11 (37-26). The Raiders were able to cut the deficit to six at the 15:16 mark, but the Titans answered with a 12-0 scoring spurt to take their largest lead of the game of 18 (49-31), just prior to the 12-minute media timeout.
About nine minutes later, sophomore
Lauren Allen (Rochester, MI/Rochester) put Detroit up by eight (58-50), again, which was the Titans' final basket, but the Raiders could not get any closer than four points to UDM the remainder of the contest.
After being down by seven, Detroit ended the first half on a 10-2 run, which included six points from Mulroy, to give the Titans a slight 27-26 advantage at the break.
Mulroy shot 70 percent from the field and missed only one attempt from beyond the arc, while sophomore
Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) scored in double figures with 12 and collected a career-high four blocks. In addition, UDM sophomore
Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) dished out a game-high nine assists, which is one shy of her personal-best., and also pulled down a team-best six rebounds.
Senior Erica Richardson led WSU in rebounding (7), while senior Kanisha Ward netted a team-high 13 points for the Raiders.
Detroit shot 49 percent from the field (22-of-45), while WSU had a 22-of-55 showing on the afternoon. The Raiders won the battle of the boards, 34-24, but UDM dished out 16 assists to WSU's 13.
The Titans will return to action when they No. 6 Loyola at Calihan Hall in a Horizon League Championship Semi-Final match-up on Wednesday, March 10 at 7 p.m.
