Women’s Soccer's Offense Opens up with 6-0 Win over Madonna

(BOX SCORE)

Detroit's women's soccer team scored four first half goals and added two more tallies in the second half for a 6-0 victory over the Madonna Crusaders on Thursday afternoon.

The Titans played as the road team at Titan Field against Madonna and came out with heavy pressure to start the game. Detroit had a few chances early but the first marker of the game came when Abby McCollum (La Salle, MI/Monroe) scored at 24:40.

“The first couple games were tough as I was catching up with things but it felt great,” said McCollum on her first collegiate goal.

Sarah Dzuris (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester) then served a corner kick right into the six-yard box and Alexandra Suschak (Brecksville, OH/Brecksville) placed a nice header into the net.

“I put it in the box and we have a few girls that are good in the air. I usually aim for Alex, and that's pretty much what happened,” said Dzuris on the Titans' second goal of the game.

Nina Carter (Clinton Twp., MI/Chippewa Valley) and Archana Wadhawan (Troy, MI/Troy Athens) also netted first half goals with McCollum drawing assists on both.

In the second half, Kaitlyn Quarrel (Thunder Bay, ON/St. Ignatius) scored on a penalty kick after she was taken down inside the penalty area and she also recorded her first career NCAA goal.

Alexandra Suschak added another marker which was the final Titan goal of the day as Dzuris earned her third assist off a corner kick this year. Suschak volleyed Dzuris' cross for her second of the day.

"One thing we have been concentrating on this year is our set pieces and I think our goals have shown that it has paid off so far,“ said head coach Mike Lupenec.

Goaltender Nora Abolins (Demorestville, ON/Centennial) played the first half and Emily Oberheim (Springfield, VA/Lee) played the second as neither freshman Detroit keeper had to make a save for the shutout. Detroit had 13 corner kicks on the day which was three short of tying a Titan women's soccer record set in 1994 against Valparaiso. Detroit outshot Madonna 32-1.

"Whenever you can have freshmen score for you this early in the season, it's a big thing for your program, I am impressed with how our freshmen played today and also the work from our set pieces. We got a couple of nice goals," said Lupenec.

Detroit's next action will be this Sunday for the official home opener at Titan Field. The Titans will welcome Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) for a 1:00 p.m. match.
