Detroit's women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against Oakland on Sunday at the Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac.
Oakland (1-4-1) scored the first tally of the game and was up 1-0 at the half. At 65:51 of the second half, UDM (3-2-2) tied the game on a free kick after an Oakland foul. Sophomore Sarah Dzuris (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester) took the shot from just outside the 18-yard box and angled the ball into the upper right corner of the net.
“It's not the result we wanted, but considering we didn't have a good day, I think it was a fair result,” said head coach Mike Lupenec. "I did like how we defended their set pieces even though they scored on one, but we scored on one too.”
Detroit was outshot 25-11 overall, but each team put six shots on goal. The Titans managed one shot throughout the overtime periods to Oakland's four.
“The encouraging thing is that we battled and have gone into overtime three times this year. We have won one and tied two. In past years, we might have lost these games, but it shows that these girls have a lot of heart and they are going to fight right to the end,” commented Lupenec.
The Titans had a great scoring chance at 21:39 of the first half when sophomore Nina Carter (Clinton Twp., MI/ Chippewa Valley) had a breakaway, but the Oakland goalkeeper came out to challenge and Carter's shot went right into the goalie's hands.
Nora Abolins (Demorestville, ON/Centennial) made five saves in net for Detroit while only having to make one of those in the overtime sessions.
The next action for the Titans will be this Friday as they host Central Michigan at Titan Field at 4:00 p.m.
