The 2010 men's soccer team will return to Titan Field tomorrow for the regular season home opener against the Bowling Green Falcons. The game will begin at 4:00 p.m.
Detroit (0-3-1) started the 2010 season with a four-game road trip. They traveled to Ann Arbor to face the Michigan Wolverines in the opener, and then they went to Cincinnati to face the Bearcats. UDM took the Wolverines into overtime, despite playing a man down, but they fell short as Michigan won the match by the final score of 2-1. The Cincinnati game was also a close match as the teams battled through 110 minutes of action to end in a 1-1 tie.
After a week of practice the team traveled to Greenville, South Carolina to play in the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational. The team played in yet another double overtime game as they took a tough 4-3 loss to Furman. Game two of the invitational was against the College of Charleston.
Ya Ya Toure (Ypsilanti, MI/Willow Run) scored the lone goal of the game for Detroit as they were defeated 3-1. Toure has been a bright spot for the Titan offense. The junior has three goals on the year to go with an assist for a team-high seven points.
Otieno Victor (Kisumu Nyanza, Kenya),
Moustafa Bazzi (Dearborn, MI/American Muslim Academy), and
Pat Lepera (Windsor, ON/St. Joseph's Catholic) have rounded out the scoring for Detroit with one goal each. Freshman
Adam Bedell (Livonia, MI/Churchill) and
Nate Robinson (Novi, MI/Novi) are tied for the team lead in assists (2).
Bowling Green heads into Wednesday's match-up with an overall record of 0-1-2. The Falcons tied Appalachian State 0-0 to open the season, and followed that up with a 2-2 tie at Davidson. The first loss of the season for Bowling Green came against the top ranked team in the nation, #1 Akron.
Max Weston leads Bowling Green with three points on the year. He had a goal and an assist against Davidson. Zach Schewee and Chris Jurtovski are the only other Falcons to record a point early in the 2010 season. Schewee scored a goal against the Wildcats, while Jurtovski earned an assist.
Wednesday's contest marks the 23rd time these two teams have went head-to-head. Detroit holds a 6-14-2 record against the Falcons, yet they were victorious over Bowling Green a year ago with a 3-2 overtime win.
The second game of the week for the Titans is a road match in Pittsburgh, PA against Duquesne. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
