The Detroit women's soccer team played 110 minutes of action against Central Michigan at Titan Field but the end result was a 0-0 tie.
UDM (3-2-3) and Central Michigan (3-2-1) played the large majority of today's game in the middle third of the field. The total shots were 8-5 in favor of Central Michigan, with the Chippewas putting six of those on goal to Detroit's four.
“When you talk about a team like Central Michigan, you're looking at a team that won a MAC championship and beat Purdue in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last year,” said head coach
Mike Lupenec. “I told the girls if we could match their intensity and win some of the 50/50 battles, I thought we could pull out a victory today.”
Freshman goalkeeper
Nora Abolins (Demorestville, ON/Centennial) made six saves for Detroit recording her third shutout of the season. Abolins made a number of key stops for the Titans. With less than one minute remaining in the first overtime period, Abolins steered a Chippewa shot away after a corner kick left the ball right in front of the net to a CMU player. Abolins also made a big save earlier just before the 38th minute when the Chippewas managed to get a breakaway forcing her to react quickly on the opposing shot to keep the game scoreless.
With one game left before Horizon league play starts, Lupenec was happy to see the team battle it out against a tough team from the Mid-American Conference.
“This was a game that helps us measure where we are as a team as we continue to prepare for our conference games,” stated Lupenec. “I thought in the first half, we weren't as intense as in the second half and in overtime, but we played well and battled hard against a tough Central Michigan team today.”
The Titans return to the field this Sunday as they host Eastern Kentucky. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m., and you can follow all of the soccer action with live stats by clicking
